Number Plate To Contain Year Of Registration

Would'nt it be a good idea to include the year of registration of the vehicle on the number plate. The country where I live it has been implemented. Eg GE8977Z- 09 (09 is the year of registration).

The more things you cram in to the number plate, the smaller the font becomes and the harder it is to read

Not another format change.. We've had too many changes to the number plate format (none of them with a sensible logic)..

I don't understand why they started the 'english numbers' with GA-****.

However, I think now the numbering format is starting to show some logic with K, L series's coming to play. But don't know how they are going to handle it when they run out of 2 english letter combinations. (they soon will...)

Agreed but the number plate in my car is the normal size and the fonts are quite big.

They started english numbering with GA because they were planning to replace old numbers with AA to FY ( except DP ). Now it seems they are not replacing old numbers with english lettered plated, yet they say they are running out of two letter codes. :)

A 3 letter number plate system is talked about and was also mentioned in an earlier post under the same heading.

The 3 letter plate is supposed to replace the current ones issued.

I guess they are waiting to run out of options in the current set up to introduce the new system.

That was the initial plan and they planned for the vehicles already registered in SL starting from 1sri1. They started with GA with that estimation. However they made big mistakes from the beginning. major one is disregard the vehicle class in allocating numbers. Earlier system it was very easy to identify the class of the vehicle / fuel type by just looking at the number series. This was discussed here and there's are threads describing some number series. They ran into issues with buses running around with bike plates (all GX- ) simply they couldn't distinguish by looking at the number and promised machines to read the sticker on the wind shield were not given to cops. Also the DP series. They wouldn't have realized that DP series only has 9999 combinations and what to do if diplomatic vehicle count goes over that. Also another issue was once a civilian purchases an ex diplomatic vehicle then number place reversing required. FZ series came into the picture, again mess. Later they addressed the issue by replacing the province code by DP and issuing the running number. And now without giving readers to cops they've re-invented the wheel by allocating number series and that's why they're running out of two letter numbers for certain fast moving categories. what is for cars after KZ ? L series is already given for lorries. Improper planning and lack of long term vision.

I'm sad about the state of affairs, but man, I really had to laugh after reading that :D Your post needs to be framed in gold.

Isn't the year of registration printed on that little sticker that's pasted on windshields? Although you can't read it from a distance like a number plate cause the print is so small.

All UAE rear license plates (at least the ones I've seen) have a replaceable tag which denotes the expiration date of the vehicles registration. When you renew the registration, you replace the existing sticker with the new one supplied. I remember in the 80s and early 90s this used to be a small plastic disc with embossed numbers inserted into a holder on the license plate.

but isnt that the same as us sticking the rev. license on the windshield?
