2000 Mitsubishi Galant Diesel

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Since a deal I made on an earlier car I was going to buy fell through, I looked at a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant (diesel) just now and placed an advance. The car seems to be in really good shape. Want to know your opinions on it and if there is anything particular I should beware of. The asking price in 1.63.

Thanks.

Galant is a superb car bt have some maintenance issues. Bt a YOM 2000 Diesel is worth for 1.5mil.

If u can find out someone from Police Garage u could get the best feedback about this vehicle.

I'm not sure of which engine it is. All I know is that it is a turbo diesel. The car is in really good condition although the 65- plates make it sound old. It was purchased brand new atleast that would increase the second hand value. The only thing I dislike is the dreadful idle sound of older diesel cars, but I can live with it considering a diesel will save me a bunch of cash since I travel between Colombo and Kurunegala twice a week. Did not pick it up yet since the owner promised to fix a couple of things such as the antenna, mud flaps an a trim piece that fell off. Should get it tomorow.

BTW do you know if 2001+ instrument clusters are compatitable with 2000 galants? I ask this because i dislike the old style odometer and would prefer a digital odo. Just my pet peeve.

Dont know a lot about them but I can attest to one thing, that TD engine pulls like a train! Did colombo to hikkaduwa a month or so back in a friend's car, 6 people managed to fit in reasonably well and we got there in one hour and 5 minutes exactly... The motor and drivetrain are very smooth (extremely so for an older diesel).

Just picked the car up. You were right, it does pull like a train. The pickup is just crazy. Never knew an old deisel engine like that can pull as hard as it does. Anyway I'm going to drop it off at the garage today as the AC belt needs to be replaced and the clutch adjusted because it's a bit tight. Not regretting buying this car though.

congratz on ur new ride mate :) keep on updating

Thanks.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a stereo? I need a double din one with a direct input for my ipod. Would prefer one of those new LCD units. Any suggestions for one on the cheap side? also how much do they usually cost? BTW i'm not looking for anything great as I listen to my music at a pretty low volume.

Congrats on your new purchase. Do a full service including all oil, filters change. Further, keep in mind that the condition of the air cleaner is critical for this turbo engine and always use the original air cleaner (slightly expensive) Does it has a turbo timer installed? if not recommended to fit a one, no hassle in counting seconds and waiting to switch off the engine when you're in a hurry.

Yeah It will get serviced after the clutch issue is solved today. Can you explain how the whole turbo process works and why i can't switch the car off right away and why I need a timer. I'm new to turbos. Thanks again Harshan.

Harshan, actually whats the deal with the timers? How critical are they? If they are as critical wouldn't the vehicle comes with a timer built in?

From what I read the engine oil cools the unit so you need to let the engine idle a bit before shutting it off. The timer just lets you take the key out but run the engine for a set amount of time before shutting off so that the unit cools down. I guess a timer would increase the life of the turbo charger by letting it cool down faster.

Instead of using a built in turbo timer they advise on user manual to let the engine run for a while before switching it off, at least for diesel turbos which works at higher pressure than petrol. This warning is printed on the dash board itself on some Indian vehicles. Cost effective way :)

When engaged, turbo "fan" revs at extremely high rpms and oil cooler continues to cool the turbo. Imagine you shut down the engine at once in this scenario. Turbo fan would come down from extreme high rpm to 0 at once coz engine won't take any more air into it. This generates excessive load on fins, which doesn't generate while engine at work. Further, at this instance it need to be further cooled down, but when engine stops oil circulation stops, which makes heated oil to remain inside turbo. These two will be harmful for the turbo and might reduce the life of the turbo unit.

When engine runs idle for sometime, it'll give room for turbo to either slow down or to come to a complete stop depending on how turbo kick off works. This also gives room to heated up oil to cool down through oil cooler.

So Harshan, How long should you let the engine idle before shutting it off? and how long should gthe turbo timer be set for?

Thinking of getting one installed after all the reading i did. Wonder how much it will cost though.

Even a thrashed engine would good to go off after 120 seconds of idle run. There are turbo timers automatically adjust shutdown time depending on the length of the run. A simple one where timer is manually set, can be installed between 2~3k. Search the forum for Miniace's contact given at Darley road, Ruwan. Now he has a shop and does all sort of things S*n L*nka did.
