there is also a Honda india and a Mercedes Benz india that assemble cars for the indian market... Doesnt mean that honda is an indian company or that MB is indian either. They are merely subsidiaries

So whether you my friend " like or not", Fiat is and will remain an Italian company.

But the cars coming to Sri Lanka may not be Italian... :(

(if Fiat is actually assembling in India... which more and more manufacturers are doing)

With Suzuki Swift (brand new Indian vs. brand new Japanese) the quality difference is purely due to country of manufacture (with others like Belta vs. Yaris it might be argued that Belta is better because it's for JDM). Which is not to say that the Indians are not able to build good cars, just that it seems no one wants to make that happen yet.

The Company is Italian.

Think about it. The Vios is made in Thailand, but no one calls Toyota a Thai company, do they?

Victoria's Secret stuff may be made in SL, but its not called Victoria's Secret Sri Lanka, now is it?

Aren't there engine size and transmission differences between Indian and Japanese Swifts?

dunno about engine, but the indian is manual and the jap is auto (at least, the brand new ones... maybe there was a manual for JDM).

but I was more referring to the quality of the plastics and such like...

Yes, the company would still be Italian, but I was more concerned about the quality (or perception of quality) of the cars that they produce.

There is a "Oh, but it's not made in Japan" perception about the Vios, Yaris, Avanza and also recent Hondas.

Also, it's a bit hard to decide on what basis to associate brands and countries.. after all, just because Volvo was bought by Geely, I don't think we will call Volvo a chinese brand (nor are Jaguar or Land Rover Indian). I think even if Volvo moved their entire production facility and R&D team to China we still wouldn't call it a chinese brand (or would we  ?)

There is a "Its not made in Germany" feeling about the Mercs they make in India too, but that is pretty much limited to countries without a track record. It doesn't become "Mercedes - India" anyway.

I mean, there are plenty of Nissan's made in the US, but it doesn't draw a "not made in Japan" remark. Neither is Nissan branded non-Japanese or American.

Lotus hasn't become Malaysian either ;) It changed hands a lot longer ago than Volvo, Jag or Land Rover. Besides, there is no question of the ownership changing hands with Fiat. It was and remains Italian, as much as the Japanese companies that opened plants in America, and made cars specifically for that market.

In short, the only Fiat India is a country office, not an entity with its own branding and own dealers/agents!
