Depends on what you want from the car. If you're one of those types that is considering buying one simply because you've heard they are cheap to buy and you want the "look" and "status" that a Euro car gives but you dont actually LIKE the cars themselves particularly then please save yourself the trouble and avoid them.

I'll have a stab at answering the questions anyway for what it's worth.

1. Market Price - The PassAt and Bora are two very different cars, and Skoda has an entire separate range so you cant give one market price for all. Sticking with the Passat and the Bora, Boras retail for between 1.6 and 1.8 Million realistically. 1998-2001 (pre Facelift or B5 Model) Passats realistically should be priced at between 1.2-1.6 Million although asking prices vary wildly. The 2001-2005 Facelift (or B5.5) versions go from anywhere between 2.0-2.5 Mill depending on condition, seller, buyer etc.

2. Spares Availability - Much better than before with several importers who have most of the major parts in stock. Body parts might be a bit of a hassle but definitely not unobtainable. They will be more expensive than Toyotas and Nissans.

3. Fuel Efficiency - Not really

4. Secondhand Market - Good cars are in high demand but difficult to find. Most of these cars have already depreciated to their lowest point so any massive drops in value are unlikely unless a major shift happens in the overall market like a huge tax drop. The actions of the agents and lack of parts have given them a bad reputation hence the low prices. But now that the parts problems are mostly sorted and since there now is an Independent Specialist for them, things are slowly looking up.

Essentially, if you're just looking for something big, cheap and flash that you can abuse and run on the cheap, go buy a "Jaguar Light" Hyundai Sonata and get it diesel converted.

Passats/Boras et al can only properly be run by people who understand that they will definitely have random issues and are prepared to deal with these because they appreciate the many other qualities that make these cars stand out from the Allion/Axio/121 crowd. If used that way, with the proper care and maintenance, they will serve you well. Otherwise they will become a nightmare that will make you curse everything and everyone ever connected with them. So consider yourself warned. When you buy one of these you aren't only buying a car, you are buying a hobby as well.

My hobby blew a Steering rack O ring yesterday.... ;) Shoots out red fluid about 6 inches past the left wheel arch... how cool is that???

Just after I got the brake matter licked.

Used a Bora for 4 years from new and had no major issues or complaints. Parts were not an issue. i used to buy spares from an individual down Kasssapa road . There must be many more now. And cost of parts are quite comparable to any Japanese.

Mine was 1.6 and did arounf 7-7.5 in city running.

Thanks for the info. Comparing to the FB15 new shell, which one is best buy.

FB15 new shell or passot

I m expecting good looking reliable car. According to ur market price I can go to passot without any lease. (1.8 ML). If I go to FB15 I have to lease at least 6 lks. So I have to pay interest as 2 lks. I don't know what is the FB 15 resale value after 4 yrs.

It is headache for paying lease for me. I m just pointing out this and appreciate your valuable comments.

You should go through Supra_Natural's post again machang.

Don't think you should compare Euro and Jap vehicles straight out. You're gonna get it from the Euro guys now. :D

It's a VW. They're one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. Yes, they're reliable. But they do have a fair bits of gadgets on them, from what I've read. And the more complicated something is, the more chances they have of going wrong. Especially since they're several years old. And btw, it's spelt 'Passat'. :)

Did supra natural's previous post mean nothing to you? Seriously if you are going to compare between an fb15 and a vw you should probably go for an FB 15. If you are going to buy something like a Passat you need to make sure that resale values and cost and availability of spares don't mean much to you.

Like the passat, both my vehicles have horrible resale values coupled with various problems that arise from time to time and expensive spares. The reason I got them Is that I enjoy the ride and I know my way around cars and can afford to put one car out of service when a problem occurs.

If you need a reliable ride that will get you from point a to point b fast and cheap then go for the fb15.

But if you want to get from point A to B with a stop at the garage midway then go for the vw.

The fact is that while it may be cheaper you will probably end up paying a lot of money fixing things. If you can afford it then it will be a really good car.

Get a FB15..don't think twice about it.. A Euro can become your 3rd or 4th car of ownership..not now

I would rather put it as, if you want to get from A to B with the lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) then get the FB15

(TCO = purchase price, depreciation, fuel cost, repairs, service, brain damage of finding parts / good mechanics / learning about the car, etc.)

If you want to get from A to B with comfort and features that most FB15 owners don't even imagine exist in cars, then get the Passat.

(but hey, if those features meant anything to OP, he would never have compared the Passat to a FB15)

And the 1.8 turbo engine you'll find in most passats in Sri Lanka will smoke the whatever engine (1.3?) in the FB15.

Judging by how you even keep mis-spelling the cars proper name,I think you are better off with the Nissan,Otherwise you'd end up ruining a poor VW for any eventual owners by expecting it to be something it is not.No offence intended.I am just being honest.

Hey VVTi,

Off topic hows the alfa doing ?

Cheers,

Funny you should ask... its an Alfa... it loves Garages... ;)

Took 4 weeks to source a original Booster for the brakes. Was just about to pull out of the garage after fixing it and regaining 100% brakes, when the steering started screaming. Found a massive leak in the rack. So stripped it to to its bones. Tomorrow, scouring Panchi to find around 10 oil seals.... ;)

The rains are not helping too.
