Decided to start a thread to get some answers for some random questions I have Please feel free to add your own questions. Stick to the basics and keep em short. So lets start.

1. Why do people over here change their oil every 5000 km but the filter every 10k or more? I've always stood by changing the filter at every oil change and when I used synthetics I would change it every 10k. You would think that the filter contains most of the larger particles capable of blocking oil passages.

I am changing both oil and filter at same time. 5K - 6K, mineral oil.

2. Why don't mechanics here ever check the spark plug gap? It's something that I have always done before installing a plug. I've found quite a few plugs over the years that were way off.

I change my Spark plugs every 25000 Km before fitting new spark plugs reset according to Vehicle Engine manufacturers Specifications.

if it's the right spec for the car, is it still necessary to check the gap before installing? or is it that the actual gap may be different from what the gap should be (manufacturing defect, etc)?

The actual gap may be different due to manufacturing defects or mishandling. A good way to gap it is do it right before you install the plug.

The manual for the current car says to change oil filter when changing oil. But the manual also says to service every 20,000 miles/2 years ("normal" conditions) or 12,000 miles ("severe" conditions). of course that would be with the recommended fully synthetic oil.

the severe conditions already includes short trips (engine not reaching ideal operating temp, hence more wear) and traffic (engine running more than what the odo would indicate). so I don't know what it is with the local conditions that make the service intervals so much shorter (dust? poorer quality oil? using mineral oil when manufacturer recommended synth?) but maybe that doesn't affect the function of the filter as much.

In any case, more than the owners delaying the filter change I think it is the mechanics/service advisors who tell the customers that it isn't necessary to change the filter yet. We used to service the march @ Pitstop and if I recall, the service checklist in the booklet had something on the lines of "check oil filter".

i think most folks have no idea about the factory required gap setting. also some dont have feeler gauges...

some of the older gen chaps tend to do it by visual inspection...

this is why a factory shop manual is a must if you care for your ride :P
