On-board Dignostic Port (obdii)

I saw a cool gadget (ScanGuage II) in amazon.com which displays whole lot of gauges (Fuel economy, throttle position, battery voltage, coolant temperature etc.). But it needs to have an OBDII port (On-board Diagnostic port) in the vehicle. Are the vehicles imported to Sri Lanka, specially JDMs, equipped with this port? Has anybody played around with this port?

Link to the product is here.

Yes all newer vehicles have this connector. If youare planning to buy one of these see if the same protocol your car uses is supported in the tool. There are a few different protocols such as ISO9141, J1850 used by different manufacturers.

Thankx 6208, Got lot of info via wiki links. I managed to find the port in my car (Carina 211, YOM 2000) under the dashboard, behind a removable panel. :P It's a 16 pin female port, similar to the specs given in wikipedia, so I think it should be OBDII standard. Need to find more about this... Where can I buy accessories to fit into this port in Sri Lanka?

Hello,

The ScanGaugeII is compatible with the 1996 Toyota corolla as long as it is OBDII compliant. There should be a sticker under the dash usually located by the radiator or sometimes stuck to the bottom of the hood. This sticker should say somewhere on it that it is OBDII. You can also look under the dash for the OBDII Plug that is usually located close to the brake peddal or sometimes by the center counsel. You can see what the plug looks like at the following link http://mileagepros.com/Products/scangauge/...g_Pinconfig.php

Thanks,

Hi Guys, Watch out as an apperantly OBD socket is not always programmed to give out obd diagnostic codes. Here in the UK we find Jap Korean etc cars built before 2001 will hardly ever allow access to an OBD scanner. On some models we can get Flash codes by bridging wires on this port!

Here in europe OBD codes and accesebility to them is required by law in cars made after 2001. I am not aware if the Japanese complied with this standard when making cars for the domestic Japanese market.

This is how the OBDII port in my car looks like

It is located under the steering wheel, behind a removable panel in the dashboard. Nilantha, you must be referring to an older standard since the OBDII port should be located within 1 meter of the driver according to the US law.

As Maithri pointed out, OBD & CAN are a must in USA & European countries. I always had the doubt whether the JDMs are fully complied to these standards although they have the port visible. But, there may be guys who have played around with these ports in JDM cars and we like to hear their experience...

I have got down this unit for my car, but unfortunately it works only with OBD-II vehicles and mine is a Japaneese domestic Model. However I Tried with many non-japaneese and Agent-imported Japaneese vehicles and it worked very well with them.

if anyone interested. please let me know your contact details.
