if i'm not wrong...VVTi had the box filter and not the cone one.

I think when you have the filter area more or less the same...it's very tough to let in more air without compromising somewhere.

IMHO....to gain a tad bit more power, letting more dust in to your motor doesn't make much sense.

especially if you're a regular road driver. On racing applications it's different when every little bit helps.

I'd rather use paper filters and change them a more frequently.

Never believed in using pressurized air to properly clean paper filters so i change mine every other service.

Not for performance...but just to make things work as they are designed to :)

I had both.... on the P11... I still have the used box filter lying around somewhere.

Any reason why you guys are using K&N filters? As opposed to OEM ones?

Fuel economy- I have both the OEM and the K&N, when the K&N is out for cleaning- I use the OEM and get about 10% less fuel economy.

Because the K&N allows for greater airflow?

I guess its more to do with less restriction of the air flow entering the engine.. i.e. less energy needed to suck in the required amount of air, should translate into less fuel being burned on producing that required energy. This is highly subjective though- and should depend on the car and driving style as well

OT but wouldn't using pressurized air damage the filter?I mean if you are using air to clean it, you may push blocked particles right through the membrane, thus expanding the holes in it.

i think most garages, service station chaps almost always clean the air filter with pressurized air. Some vehicle owners too like this cos they can see all the dust and stuff leaving the airfilter making it "clean" :P

My eralier service station bugger thought i was nuts to replace air and oil filters every oil change :)

they are under the impression that a good air filter can be used for a couple of years :D

Interestingly WAIs present a flip side view of this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warm_air_intake

Disregarding the fact that what-people-do-to-their-machines-to-get-that-extra-kilometer the engineering behind this is quite intriguing. Too bad the research paper referenced in the above Wikipedia article is not readable. Must be something there beside boring math part ;)

I'm really skeptical about that theory. It just does not serve a purpose when you already have the proven option of cold air- which is far more straight forward and less risky.

Good point on the high pressure cleaning, my aunts Terios is now over 2 and a half years old and is still running the original air filter... i'm not happy about it at all, (specially since its almost black on 1 side) but since the mileage is low, the agents keep telling her it's fine no need to replace it... so what they say come first..

btw +1 on replacing the airfilter every other service or 8 to 10 thousand Kms, safest thing to do in cmb.. only way the k&n gets the + point there is on the price factor. :)
