I am new here and this is my first post.

Am currently looking at buying an AUDI (A6 or A4) preferably diesel... second hand

Any ideas what the going rates are these days ? and some useful advice on what to look out for and the 'ownership experience'

@LS110: The A4 2002 - 2005 model petrol variant goes for between 2.7. to 3.3 depending on engine displacement and condition. With the A6 of the same era going for very similar prices, probably around the 3.7 - 4.0 mil mark for an excellent specimen. The diesels that are maintained well should demand a higher price than the petrol variants, due to Sri Lankan fuel prices. So around 3.4 for a 1.9tdi A4 engine would be a good deal, if maintained with proper records. Not sure how much the A6 diesels would go for.

You should be able to however get a good deal, since Audi's to tend to have a relatively slow second hand market in the country than mercs and bimmers.

I gather the asking price for 2000 YOM A4,A6 1.9TDI is about 2.6

At this age are these cars beyond their prime, or as RR as mentioned, if well maintained are they good for quite a few more years of service ?

I've actually seen the A4 1.9 TDI advertised for less on Autolanka, though prices fluctuate a lot. The engines in these cars are quite solid and are the same VW units used in a number of different cars. I think you should always try to opt for a brand new import with a traceable service history (hardier suspension and tropicalised interior), and should get the car checked by the agents before you commit to a purchase. There are also two models, and you can tell the difference by the steering wheel (the newer one has a big round horn button in the middle of the steering wheel with the Audi emblem)

The prices i have quoted are for the B6 series A4. You are looking at a B5 series A4. then a diesel car should go for around the 2.3 mill range. But it all depends on the maintananace

don't know to comment about audi's; however, a useful resource for Euro cars is usedcarexpert.co.uk - they have checklists of what to look for (i.e. common faults) on different models.

European cars in general age quite well. Rust is not usually a problem though some of the electronics on the climate control systems etc do start to play up. I think the interiors of this Audi's hold up quite well as well. Prepare for some expenditure on the suspension and steering side (shocks, bushes, steering rack) and enlist the services of a specialist. Thankfully I hear there are quite a few good ones in SL so in Colombo this should not be too big a problem. Forum member Supra Natural has the details.

Be prepared to import some parts in (this is not big an issue either). Body parts might not be as easy to find but there will be specialists who import them.

To be honest 10 years isn't really that old.

Also consider the VW Passat TDI.

Audi's and vw's are solidly built cars and 10yrs will not be a problem,

But always spare some green for repairs as there might be some (even in similar aged japs).

Don't get the false interpretation that parts r expensive and hard to find, any thing can be brought to u'r door step via e-bay.

As the hilarious prices given to 10 or more yrs old corolla 110's the Audi A4's and Vw passat's are a steel for this money.

There are places to maintain these cars at toyota maintenance money,

And as u'r talking about the TDi.

This may soud a little harsh in the morning but frankly it is Le Mans winning tech.

got a 2000yr 1.9TDi(B5,made in Japan) last month for 2.5million.Totally happy with the ride.Great fun to drive(taking idiot bus drivers by surprise when overtaking!!),good noise insulation (from Idiot Leyland horns),and great suspension..Had a ride in a 2009 Montero a few days ago,and it was total cr*p.Believe me,once you go German,you would never get back to Jap...Maintenance is not that of an issue,if you know enough about the car not to get ripped off by dealer everytime you go for service(Rs.30k with all filters and new oil/coolant at dealer,scheduled every 6months or 8000kms )and use outside mechanics for smaller repairs and use agent only for big issues like timebelt change(Rs.65k without waterpump,+40k with waterpump at dealer) or electrical faults which hardly happens.But always go for a brandnew dealer import customized for tropical weather(A/C,exterior,interior etc),not the reconditioned private imports from UK etc...

Be prepare to spend money on electrical items (window motors, power seat motors, wiper motors, etc) . Not sure about the TDI but on Gasoline engines are very sensitive if not well maintained with 5w-40 502 00/02 spec oil. it will sludege up if not. Keep extra pair of bulbs too (h7, 7506, 7225).

if you baby it and dont put many miles on it then its a solid car!
