Drag Racers Beware

Recommended Posts

Drag racing has again been reported in several roads in Colombo in the night as the security restrictions have been relaxed and the police vows to take action against those engaging in this dangerous sport that poses a threat to road users.

Police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said that if anyone wants to have races in the roads they should take permission from the city traffic police but would not give clearance for such activities to be taken in roads which are extensively used by the public.

The police have now taken steps to increase patrolling in the Marine Drive in the night where drag racing had been reported in the recent past.

“These races cause accidents and put the public as those who engage in them in danger. We will take tough action against any individuals engaged in drag racing as our priority is to protect and ensure the safety of the public”, he said.

“There are places where you can go for a race but permission from the police is required to conduct such races. The police are aware of these activities and the public can complain to any police station or call the police emergency or 119 if they are disturbed or harmed by such races”, he said.

The police had received several complaints recently about drag racing on the Marine Drive and they were able to arrest six youths in the Bambalapitiya area. A fine of Rs.3500 had been imposed on each of the arrested individuals for reckless driving in public roads.

The Bambalapitiya police had also taken four motorbikes and two cars into their custody. These suspects had caused disturbance to residents and drivers by exceeding 150 kilometers per hour during the last weekend on the Marine Drive.

Nah. A can of distilled water AKA battery water :D

No, I bet a can petrol would be much valuable for them, than anything else :)

Anyways, any idea what cars were taken into police custody?

Hmm. How about hybrid drag races then? The quietest from 0 - 100 kmph wins!

LOL...they need one hell of a long road to do this. :D

Well, drag racing on public roads IS A danger to everyone. So there is nothing wrong in trying curb the practice. If anyone wants to take their penile extensions with beat barrels to their ungoverned speed limits, one can always book one of the 2 or 3 race tracks in Sri Lanka and have an organized event. You have to understand that there are more and more cars on the roads being driven by drivers with very little experience.

The cops and media have nothing better to do these days....

Jeez, for once the police are actually doing their jobs and people are pissed off about that?

I'm actually glad that they are really putting an effort into stopping these idiots who are clearly endandering the lives of other road users. We all have the right to relative safety on the roads. Public roadways SHOULD NOT be used for these people, with pink lights on the under body and fart cannons, to show who's the biggest fag of them all.

Absolutely with you on this.......our roads are way too congested for this kind of thing, and you'd find loads of vehicles and pedestrians out even at 2am. This is especially true on weekends when these err... 'penile extensions' as you so eloquantly put it come out to play. :D

The risk is just not worth it.

Where I live there are a few monkey with WRXs or Honda Julolas running up and down most Fridays and Saturday nights. Its just a matter of time before they climb a wall or a tree becomeing one with thier cars... ;)

No one will miss a drunk show-off monkey killing themselves in their daddy's flashy car, (recent history has shown us this) but what will become of the poor hapless road user who was going home after a hard day's work if he happened to get in the way of the said monkey?

Problem is, there are more and more inexperienced and immature drivers on the roads these days.....sometimes a law unto themselves.

Money talks and a lot of these people have lots of 'spokespersons'.

If they have to learn the hard way, well then so be it....but like you said its the innocents who are at risk.

So for a spirited convo like this old times; ?BYD
My father has gone ninja about getting one, despite being the new hype/fad here these are common across the world and I've seen a few cross 100,000km in Nepal and Australia.
Seal - Looks nice, very premium interior but too low for my applications
Sealion - Very Premium, feels very well built, BUT that 1.5L on that reasonable chunk of car with a measly 18KW battery seems like a recipe for trouble, incase they sink in value at least the fuel economy must justify that (They say it's a BYD engine - though the lore is it is a hyundai engine)
Atto 3 - Most sold from their lot apparently, common af, Seems to be the best bang for buck IMHO, Its electric since BYD is famed for that, Interior is kinda good, the thing is larger than a vezel but not too large like the Sealion, cheap mobility I guess with less things to go wrong
Dolphin, almost a smaller atto and again too car like and not suited for my application.
JK nailed it on the price and distribution but the only guaranteed thing here is the lot are gonna muck up the aftersales. The Kandy center staff behave like the crew from a Govt. post office.
What are your thoughts and opinions? Could this be the next Wagon R or is this a passing fad like the Micros of 2000s-2010s?

I have an empty parking slot at home previously occupied for 6 years by the starlet and 3 months by an AD wagon -what would be a bang-for-the-buck fun shitbox? Preferably auto as I live in a crowded suburb that has sapped the joy of stick shift out of my system.
