Hi every one..

I have a Suzuki Swift HT51S - Japanese (2004 jeep model).

Recently i experienced a ignition knock when the auto transmission change gears to over drive. When that happens obviously the pulling power goes down too. So i take the vehicle to **W and they did a EFI tune up, Scaning and a injector cleaning.

But still the ignition knock is there. They say it will be ok within next 300 - 500 Kms. After the tune up it is not that much worse but it occurs after i travel 5 - 6 kms from the start. Even i switch off AC there is no improvement. When the engine gets a weight ignition knock starts.

Gear shifting is normal and kick pedal is fine but initially it gets the ignition knock and it gets settle quickly.

I am using

Mobil Super 1000 (changed 120 km before)

90 octane petrol

Auto Transmission oil changed 12000km before

Plugs (cleaned in the service since they are originals and they are ok)

Please help me to over come this situation.

The most simplest reason could be you are running a little retard timing. Correction is simple and takes only few minutes.

Other one is that since you mentioned about settling when working temperature is reached, I suspect your hydraulic lifters of valve adjustments areculprits.Valves running premature heating due to poor seating causes cold engine knocking. this requires fine tuning and needs a good technician to correct.First try adjust the timings and see.

Sorry for the dumb question. I thought modern engines timing is not adjustable manually. That it is controlled by the ECU only :speechless-smiley-019:

Nope it is not.

i think hes referring to ignition timing, not cam so unless its on a dizzy setup not coilpacks it cant be adjusted other than through the ecu.

Ignition timing shouldnt change all on its own unless its due to other factors such as using a lower ocatane fuel than the engine is normally run on though.

Id put new plugs in it if the problem has arrisen since servicing. you should not "clean" spark plugs as its commonly done with a wire brush which leaves a thin coating on the electrode of the plug as the electorde is harder than mild steel. Its a known cause of a under load missfire from a performance point of view, could be the hydralic valves as MINIACE has said though if the wrong grade of oil has been used in the change but this would all cause a missfire not engine knock... does it have a dual mass flywheel?

A dual mass flywheel is where it has 2 parts to it instead of one solid piece. It's joined using heavy duty bushes and is designed to absorb the torque from pull away. It's usually diesels that have this type of flywheel but they could be fitted to petrols. Search on google images or similar and you can see the differences between them and a normal flywheel

You could also try out running on 95 , also check on your air filter if its clogged. Also better just replace the plugs though they are original its a 2004 vehicles so no harm in replacing with a new set. Also it will not cost you that much.

I am not surprised that the problem still remains even after it has been checked out by A*W, the bullsh*t about it will go off in 500kms is just a excuse as they have obviously not addressed or identified the root cause.

Its quite sad to see that the main focus of the A*W repair shop near Narehenpita is only focused on Marutis, and they find it difficult to handle more complex situations where more advanced type of cars are involved. A friend of mine has a SX4 in the shop for almost 2 months ! But I think the Nissan repair shop on Union place is a much better outfit.

Hi xaxmax,

I have a Chevrolet Cruze (suzuki made) and have the same issue as u mentioned

Hi guys,

Is there any update?

I have the same issue with my Chevrolet Cruze

After traveling some time, the car feels like heavy, and the pulling power goes down, acceleration drops, steering feels like tightened.

it feels like the car break is applied.

kind of a engine knock is heard when gear changes to OD. A garage guy said it's "advanced knock".

when doing long distance this engine weight is more noticeable and the fuel efficiency drops.

mileage is 90k

I first noticed this after doing a hard acceleration 3 months back, but it went away.

but now it comes very often.

changed ATF oil

changes spark plugs and did EFI tuneup

engine oil and filter changed at the full service

air filter changed

Nothing helped.

Please any help with this???

I had the same ignition knock issue with my 110. I took it to Mario Dias and finally he has done a clean up on the head side of the engine by putting some kind of cleaner. He said it was due to carbon build up on the head of the engine .I ran the Car for 4-5 month. But now some times I feel the same engine knock again on my Car with less pulling power.

So i guess using the head cleaner thing wont solve the issue for ever. But at least you can try it out.

Hi, I hope during the tune up they changed your Petrol Filter if not Vehicle may knock due to this also.

Try using 95 octane form (I_O_C) and just see it may solve yr problem. Try not to mix both 90 octane and 95 as the chemical content is different compared with the 95. you may refer to http://www.lankaioc....ec/Petrol95.pdf.

Just let us get this straight Does the Knok occur when you press the O/D button and it light is ON the bash board or when you press the O/D and OD button is OFF on the dash board.

How do you know that your gear has changed to over drive? or may be vice versa ? - (please do not consider it as a dumm question)

Sorry for bumping this. I also have the same issue in may car (Lancer CB2A 1994 carb) .but only when the AC is turned on. I mean when the load to the engine is high, It occurs when the gas is pressed hard in 1st or 2nd gear mostly. There's no such issue when AC is off.

hrm,

Normally this happens on top gear if the load is high on the engine. 1st or 2nd gear uncommon thing. When did you tune your vehicle last.

Mr.Dammika Fernando at Kotta Road Borralla,. Get his opinion first. Or tune your engine.

After all this where is the TEMP gauge sitting? You may say it is normal, (just below half) but is that correct? coz i had few experience with overheating cars and showing the same kinda symptoms but you wan't notice the over heat, i guess its worth to check guys

Cheers

Actually it happens in all gears but very much visible in lower gears. when engine catches speed this sound goes away.

how about the "engine idle", is it too noisy ... can you hear the engine knock (when you quickly change the throttle position while) ?

Posted

Engine idle is normal. In fact it is bit quiet. This issue occurs when the AC is turned on and after engine come to normal operating temperature. It seems when the engine is cold, knocking is minimal even with the AC turned on.

I had to remove the distributor to fix an oil leak recently. Once it is fixed back, the knocking occurred even without AC, so the garage guys adjested it a bit and the knocking stopped by that time.
