Scooter
Don't worry, guys, be happy - could be worse. Last month's gossip from China Car News: "In a bid to lower the number of cars hitting Shanghai roads every month, the Shanghai Municiple Government came up with a license plate auction system where license plates go up or down in price depending on the car buying situation within the city. Shanghai is so far the only city that has introduced a license plate auction, Beijing has introduced a lottery system that gives rich and poor alike the opportunity to drive a car within the city, the Shanghai system favors the rich only. Shanghai’s plates reached a staggering 58,625 RMB or $9,380USD per plate over the weekend, which was an increase of 5% over February 2012′s figures." Reckon the team up on Wijewardana Road have been genned up on this idea by the Chinese road engineers yet?
NZer
So what does this mean? If you have two cars you get Taxed? How does it work?
terrabytetango
How would a two car family be defined? Two or more cars under the same name? or take into account the vehicle in the spouse's name as well? or both? Unless the govt can enforce this law properly, I'm sure most nuclear families will just shift the ownership of the other car to a parent or someone else outside their immediate family. And I wonder whether if children who own cars are affected by this too if their parents have one. That would suck big time. For politicians in this country (usually ----) only One term to the Parliment and One wife to be allowed. 2nd terms can be allowed by paying 1000% Tax to poor public. Axio is mommy's, Cefiro is wife's, God knows who onws the B4... oh wait, didn't you try to sell it recently? Scooter
Might be wrong - and ya know all these government policy makers wallahs talk to each other round the region -but the Jakarta multi-vehicle tax seems to be based on the vehicle address. Is that the model SL will grab? Other stuff coming outa Indonesia now is the idea of a big big tax on the car but a reduced tax if you only use the motor at weekends....nice,eh? Another good idea for SL? shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't talk about it! Jakarta faces same problem as Colombo...too many vehicles on too little road...some of the experts over there say their city is heading for total grid-lock by 2015. No it may even be a newer WRX with higher revvs than B4. i also heard tax is for address, so either I re-register one vehicle with different address or get caught to the tax. you also got 2 cars right? harshansenadhir
my only point is, all these countries can demotivate (by increasing taxes or imposing taxes on multiple ownerships) usage and owning of personal vehicles as their public transportation is better than using personal vehicles. You can plan your travel in advance and also can achieve your travel plan to the nearest second with no hassle of walking, taking risky trishaw rides. If you take a metro/subway you can get-in to the exact building you're planning to go. IF you have a system not up to that level but at least to a close match, YES you CAN demotivate personal vehicles and also them from entering main cities creating traffic jams. terrabytetango
ya srsly, if i had a comfy bus to travel in i'd gladly avoid using my car. i can get to office with my sanity intact. sometimes i take the bus to work simply for that reason alone. my mind is a lot calmer at those times.
