Question

Friends,

I need to pick some one's brain on the engine temperature issue, I have a grand Vitara and it shows the engine temperature as less than half of the meter at all the time, even after running for about 100Km.

I am little worried whether this less engine temperature create problems with regards to fuel efficiency of the vehicle, I mean when the temperature is low will it consume more fuel to perform, if yes what can I do to rectify the issue, check with the agents and they said that the less temperature is better, but I am not sure about that, since I believe that there has to be a minimum requirement of the temperature for the engine to perform,

If any one of you can help me on this that will be great.

Thank you,

According to what I've learned and experienced there is a range of temperature an engine should run in order to achieve the maximum efficiency of the engine. So I am bit amazed to see your agent's idea about this issue.Anyway as for the starters you can check your thermostat valve, may be it's time to change your thermostat valve coz there might be a change in thermostat opening temperature even though it's still in working condition.

you have to check your Thermostat valve. may be it has blocked or there is few springs, that springs tensions may have lost. so better check the thermostat valve and replace from a genuine one. also check whether radiator fans works on time. if it is automatic check whether it is always on, if that also ok you have to check Temperature sensor.

1. check thermostat vale,

2. check radiator fans.

3. check Radiator cap.

4. check temperature sensor.

Relax: Its probably fine.

My car's temp value sits just below half too. That's where the default value is for my car. Don't panic. Check with another member who has the same model where the default level is for your vehicle. ("Watchman" has got a Vitara too, PM him- he'll probably let you know what the default level is...) Alternatively find the forum for your vehicle online and post your question there.

+1 for replies above

Stay at oem specified thermostat. running an engine cooler is not the best idea. when the ecu knows the coolant temp is low it changes the air fuel ratio to rich and you are going to use more fuel. when the ECU knows the engine is running hot it changes the ratio to lean which also not good for the engine.

Cooler engine is better is utter BS, it increases engine wear as the engine oil is not heated up properly it does not get thin enough to lubricate properly and increases the fuel consumption too.

Me too had a similar issue but on a corolla and it went away when the thermostat is replaced. I noticed a reduction in pulling power when the eng is colder.

But does it come to the 1/2 mark when in traffic ? if not the thermostat might not be the issue, and you need to find the if the 1/2 mark is the normal value for vitara, if it doesn't nothing to worry anyway.
