if I remember correctly during the early 90s, a yen was about 25 cents in Sri Lankan currency. During the mid 80s, a yen was around 10 cents. So 3.3 mill is not very expensive those days. The yen gradually got appreciated as japan moved from an export-oriented economy to an import-oriented one.

still, even a top of the line corolla gt was about 1.8 million yen at the time according to old catalogs. Anyone who bought this was either bonkers or hated attention.
