Toyota Carina Si My Road - Gear Box Option

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi All,

I have Toyota Carina Si My Road (1999 model) which comes with 1800cc engine. There are 2 buttons called "PWR" & "MANU" located just next to the gear knob (refer the below image). Can someone explain how these buttons can be used and what are the benefits of using these buttons? Thanks.

ok.

there are three settings

1. Manu (Economical)

2. Normal (when both off)

3. PWR (Power)

When Manu mode is switched on. the gears change at 2000-2500 RPM therefore it wont let the engine rev too much before changing gears.

the upside is the ride is smoother and its fuel efficient

Normal Mode changes gears 3000 RPM depending on how heavy - light footed you are

and finally in Power mode if you press the foot hard down, the gears will change at 3500-5000 RPM giving you maximum acceleration before changing gears.

however on power mode the car wont be fuel efficient.

i use the power mode when i want to overtake someone or climbing a steep hill.

I don't remember seeing a normal mode in your car :speechless-smiley-019:

Actually, I had a '99 RAV4 and a '98 Hilux-Surf which had the same modes (well the Surf was slightly different). According to the user manual the modes were as follows:

PWR : Power mode where the gear changes at higher revs and down shifts more

MANU : Manual hold mode..when you press this button the gear box holds what ever gear the car is on until the button is unpressed. Works in two ways...firstly, if you are driving along and lets say the car is in 3rd gear; you press the MANU button it will stay in 3rd gear even when you decelerate and try to accelerate again (in this mode it still automatically shifts beyond a certain point to prevent any damage). Secondly, you can select what gear you want with the lever and the A/T will not shift it. The MANU has been especially useful for me to start the car moving on 2nd gear or sticking in 1st in sticky and/or slippery situations by shifting to it with the lever.

Sorry I do not have access to the user manual now but if you look at the following you will see what I mean.

I have seen some Toyota gear boxes specifically having ECON and PWR mode buttons which is pretty much what Schiffer indicated. The following link shows an older AT Toyota gear box with these modes (sorry the doc is in Japanese)

To answer Magnum's question...the NORM mode (at least in the the RAV4 and Surf) was active when neither PWR nor MANU buttons were pressed.

ive drivin the Si. and my 210 corona has the same option

and i have tried the manu button thing to stick to one gear but tbh in both cars it didn't really work.

what it does is change gears quickly in low revs in both cars O.o

Actually, with the sequential shift nature of A/Ts it doesn't in reality hold on to the gear when start up (so it is not the same as starting in a certain gear in a M/T)...it gives you the "holding" gear sooner at lower revs and delivers lesser torque and when decelerating it shifts to the lower gear at a much later stage ..(shift points are lot lower than an ECON mode box) like i said before it still shifts <I have no idea how to clearly explain it..> For slippery and snowy starts it helps to pull off without excessive wheel slippage.
