Explorer
Hello experts, How do we recognize a problem in clutch plate? What are the most common things that can be noticed from a bad clutch plate? I'm driving a manual N16, mileage is ~160K. Recently I noticed that it makes a strange (but not loud) noise when I press (press it fully) the clutch peddle. Its like something is touching a spinning wheel once in every cycle. Could this be an indication of a bad clutch plate? Further recently I observed only once a very high RPM figure climbing a hill on 1st but the pulling power was very poor compared to the RPM figure. Is there a way to check whether the clutch plate is Ok?

Complete diagnosis is not possible without dismantling, but what you have said is enough to determine there is probably an issue with the cluthc. A mechanic would pick this up straight away. NRX
Does your clutch engage near the end of the clutch pedal travel ( up)

One key component that helps apply pressure is the clutch release bearing (or release fork). Pressure is mostly applied on the release mechanism while the clutch pedal is pressed, so the sound being emitted could also be because of a worn out release bearing. The lack of pulling power is probably because your clutch is also worn out. As The Don has stated above, the gearbox needs to be taken down to do a complete examination and is pretty straightforward to a competent mechanic.

kelum_wj
Your 2nd problems seems like a slipping clutch. Best way to test it is to park the car on an inclined place. Shift to the top gear and with the handbrake engaged release the clutch as if your trying to pick up. If the clutch is in good condition the car would stall.
