Vw Passat

MV-5

Question

This is about VW Passat (2000 to 2003 YOM)- sedan(not interested on HBs)

1. what are the different models that we can find in sri lanka (based on features and engine capacity and etc...Ex: 1.8T,some ads it says something about B5).

it would be great if you can provide some comparison between models (roughly) based on following factors

1. handling and performance(you may compare this other makes just like Audi A4,BMW 318i)

2. fuel economy

3. parts availability

4. and probable market price for (2002 YOM manual in good condition) and your recommendations

Thanks.

The Passat was only sold here as a sedan, there is no hatchback.

1. B5 is the model code for that generation. It was introduced in 1998 and ran till 2004. The facelift introduced in 2001 was coded B5.5, 1.8T is the engine that most of them come with, its 1.8 litre 4 cylinder petrol with a turbo. There also was a 1.9 litre diesel which is rarer but much more economical.

2. If you need to ask, then you probably should look at a CE110 or something. A petrol Passat will do 6-7 in the city - 10-12 outstation if its an auto, maybe 1-2 Km/l more if its a manual.

3.Parts are freely available, there is a very good independent specialist too.

4. MArket price depends on so many factors, ranges from 1.6 to 2.3 million. The more expensive ones will most likely have been looked after much better. Manuals are usually considerably cheaper than automatics. Buy the best one you can find and it'll be a nice car. Buy a bad one and it will give you hell. either way, it wont be as simple or cheap to run as a corolla.

I used to have a VW Bora. I loved it! It moved so steadily. Never had any doubt about the stability at any speed.

Found a guy names Ruwan who is a VW specialist and he did take care of the vehicle very well. ONly hiitch I had, there was a part of the gear level system which was plastic and it used to give way every few months, stranding the car on the middle of the road at times.

Parts are freely available.

No problem... Well as someone has pointed out the newer cars are from all over the place but the cars of the B5 generation were made in Germany i believe.

On another note, I tested the Yindian Polo and came away quite impressed. Quality is obviously not comparable to the euro polo but it's solid and durable looking, much more so than a swift for example... And it's a light car with a 1.6 and a 5 speed manual box, absolutely cracker drive!
