Guys, need some basic information on starting up a service station. May be there are members who already run them or have contacts in this field. And I know it’s a large investment so feasibility study and lots of preparation is required. Any inputs from automobile enthusiast here would not go in vain.

At this point I am keener in getting to know about the environmental and legal side of it. One side of the land is a water stream and other side is main road.

Once the legal side is figured out I will have to do the costing for equipments and installation costs

As for the environmental regulations read the item 70 in Govt gazette http://www.cea.lk/pdf/1533_16e.pdf. In addition you need approval of the local authority. But these things are not issues if you know how to get things done in SL. AFAIK the most difficult issue in running a service station is the handling of the work force. Most of the successful places recruit youths from distant places and provide them accommodation. Otherwise when you have work they would not turn up. I know a person who had to shutdown his station solely due to this issue because some days he had to fit himself in for absentees.

That helps in all businesses :sport-smiley-003:

If you are around Colombo, there is a service station at Ambatale called Quick Fix Automobiles (http://www.qfa.lk/). They have a service section and the waste oily water is been re-used after going through a filtering process (of course they should be using some chemicals) and they pump the filtered water back to the tank. You can have an idea if you visit there, don't know whether they will describe you the process, but worth a visit to get an idea.

Guys I'm in the process of gathering both knowledge and equipments to maintain my car. I am searching for a used "trolley jack". A brand new one will be around 30K. Do we have used ones to buy? If so what are the good places to search for in Kandy / Kurunegala and Colombo.
