0 mirage7777
100 km maximum speed limit on Southern Expressway August 20, 2011, 7:27 pm The maximum speed limit on the Southern Expressway has been stipulated at one hundred (100) kilometers per hour, according to a Gazette notification issued by the Minister of Transport. Motor tricycles, motor tricycle vans, agricultural land vehicles, hand tractors, invalid carriages and steam driven motor vehicles are debarred from using the expressway. "No person shall drive or use any special purpose vehicle without special permission other than, where it is necessary, to carry out any activity related to the maintenance of the Expressway", the notification says. Motor cycles are also disallowed except for patrolling the road by the police divisions established by the IGP, it said. The notification further says: *No person holding a Learners Permit shall drive or use any motor vehicle fitted with a "L" plate. In the event of an accident or a breakdown at any point on an Expressway, the driver shall be required to display the reflective warning triangle and hazard warning lamp of the vehicle, in order to give adequate notice to the other users. * No driver shall enter or use any Expressway if the vehicle being used exceeds the maximum tare limits of the vehicle, or the gross vehicle weight as specified in the Certificate of Registration. * No person who having entered an Expressway shall park or keep standing the vehicle which such person is driving, other than on a marked parking site. Any person who contravenes the provisions of these regulations shall be guilty of an offence, the notification warned. The Southern Expressway, which links Kottawa to Galle, is scheduled to be opened this month, but no date has still not been finalised, officials said. As it is a toll road, the charges to be levied from motorists will also be officially announced shortly, they said. Link here

0 Scooter
Had a phone call this afternoon from the wife who has just today travelled down the Expressway from Colombo to an exit near Ambalangoda. The authorities kindly gave permission for the journey. She is absolutely stoked by the road (she's a bit of a driving enthusiast).....she reported "it's wide, it's smooth and you can go like a bat!" She also said that the countryside the road travels through can be really beautiful. Can't wait to have a drive myself.

0 Californikan
Southern Expressway to be extended to Hambantota The Southern expressway will be extended upto Hambantota from Matara as one of the most prioritized projects of the government, Road Development Deputy Minister Nirmala Kotelawala said yesterday. Mr. Kotelawala said negotiations were underway with prospective investors to start work on the extension of the southern expressway, and also on the new expressway from Colombo to Kandy. “The Colombo-Kandy expressway will be an elevated one. We are negotiating with some foreigncompanies at the moment. Anyway, we will give priority to extend the southern expressway to Hambantota. Then, we will consider the Kandy expressway,” he said. He also said the government is contemplating on the possibility of developing another expressway from Colombo to Puttalam to facilitate easy access to areas such as Anuradhapura. “This is still an idea only,” he said. Asked about the feasibility study done during the UNP regime to start work on the Colombo-Kandy expressway, he said he had no idea about it. During the 2002-2004 UNP government, the contract had also been awarded to a Malaysian company to start the project on the Kandy expressway. The company also did basic work for the acquisition of lands for the project. http://print.dailymirror.lk/news/front-page-news/54824.html

Aug 30, Colombo: Deputy Minister of Ports and Highways of Sri Lanka Nirmala Kothalawala says the opening of the country's first toll highway, Southern Expressway had been delayed due to incomplete work on signaling and access points. According to the deputy Minister some minor work are yet to be completed along the toll highway. The authorities however expect to open the expressway before the end of the year. Construction on the highway began in 2006 at a cost of $800 million.
