Mazda Steering Rack Replacement

RehanaA

Question

There is noise coming from my steering wheel when I turn it both ways. The mechanic suggested that I need to replace the steering rack of my mazda 3. I rang couple of places to check the price buy it was not available.

Can someone suggest where can I purchase a steering rack for a mazda 3 and if possible the price range?

Thank you.

The Axela rack should fit the 3 as well, and since the car is plentiful I don't envisage you finding a replacement rack. Part prices vary between suppliers so get the rack removed, and take half a day and go to every shop posible on the Delkanda track and inquire on availability and price.

The last time I bought a part in Delkanda there was a 7500 RS price differece on a 7500 rupee part.

That EPS Steering rack of mazda 3 will cost you a fortune to replace. It very well might be a small issue somewhere.Just check with Maz*a motors, pepiliyana,They will be able to diagnose the issue correctly and usually carries all the parts of that car. What kind of a noise you are getting?I believe only the rack ends are shot.

What is the purpose of replacing the whole rack?. Did you try for repair option.! There must be a component within the rack which may cause for noise also be replaceable .

Thank you @GayanR, @Rohnd, @NRX and @Nish D. Really appreciate your input.

According to the mechanic, the rack would cost around 15k. Repairing the rack would not last long and replacing would be the best option.

I will definitely check with mazna. Any landmarks finding mazna (never been to papiliyana). I'll be coming via Nugegoda Junction.

Sound: I hear and feel a strong click sound while steering the wheel about quarter away either side.

One of my friends suggested that it's also better to get an OBD check while getting the steering rack repaired (not too sure what that is - I only know that this will detect engine problems). Do I have to pay if I get this service (this might be a stupid question but I'd like to know)?

Thank you.

Since you asked, Mazna is just before the Pepiliyana round about (in front of the temple) if you come from Nugegoda and turn right from Gamsabha junction traffic lights. If you come from Kohuwala you turn left from Pepiliyana round about and it's the 1st shop on left.

Check your rack problem with Kelum or Lalith there and Amish is the guy to speak to for a scan. I don't see why you need an OBD scan for a rack problem (unless it's something to do with ABS) and yes, it will cost you around 1-1.5k to get a scan done. If you really need to scan your car (again baffles me), get a cheapo OBD scanner from ebay or burrow borrow one from a friend who has one. At least 5 guys in my office has those, it's very common.

To add to what others said, replacing the mechanical rack with second hand parts might cost 15k, but if you touch the EPS components, the cost would be significantly higher. It's always best to know what exactly is wrong and what exactly needs to be replaced.

You have to get correct evaluation before replacing or repairing a steering rack. Most of the noises in this area may be associated with ball joints, steering column components wear , rubber mounting bushes, York set supports other than the Steering rack. All these have separate Mazda genuine parts for a professional repair. What I said as repair was not the old type repairs at a lathe shop with brass or Nylon. You have to get correct evaluation for locating the noise. Purchasing a second hand rack without these would be a utter money waste.Wearing out a Steering rack is a very rare case specially for Mazdas, unless if it is a driver negligence or an accident, please evaluate the real cause. Go for an internet search, probably it may be a recalled case or problem of this car too!. OBD or any other Scanning at this stage will not be possible.
