What Is The Best Choice From Toyota Vitz Scp10 & Suzuki Swift Jeep Model

Hi dear friends,

I am a new comer to this forum. At the movement I am using Nisan FB 13 super saloon car (Manual).

I am going to upgrade my vehicle and price range will be 1.5M to 1.7M.

I am daily traveling 20km (up & down) to my office in heavy traffic ( Nugegoda/Nawala/Narahenpita).

So fuel efficiency is very important for me.

What is the best choice from Toyota Vitz SCP10 & SUZUKI Swift Jeep model.

If you guys have any other opinions please tel me.

Welcome to the forum.

If your main criteria is fuel efficiency in traffic then your choice out of the two should be a SCP10. But remember SCP10s are over 12 years old and passed 100,000 kms. But that's not a problem if they are well maintained. In a number of SCP10s of this age I've come across a failure in a plastic T-joint on the coolant path which carries hot coolant to the IACV.

Well you can search the forum and get an idea of pros and cons for both of these vehicles.

Meanwhile I would say something about swift jeep model because I have used one for 4 years and I haven't used a vitz.

Pros-good ground clearance and good visibility of the road due to the extra height and good head room as well if you know what I mean. Descent on fuel .It did 14-15 kmpl on long runs and 11-12 in Colombo. Easy maintainence

Cons- rear leg space is not enough, rear suspension quite bumpy, handling at corners not satisfactory most probably due to high centre of gravity,

Second hand market- Bought for 20 had to sell it for 18.25 but I think things have settled now.

I must say we loved having the swift through that time

Welcome to Auto Lanka forum. Basically both vehicles have relatively similar fuel consumption.If your main concern is fuel, I'm suggesting you VItz over Swift coz Vitz might have little bit of upper hand on heavy traffic fuel consumption..

The things that you should look for when you are selecting a second hand car is almost limitless and has been discussed in the forum if you search further, but here goes whatever that comes to my mind immediately and in random order for petrol cars similar to those you have mentioned above.

Check if the coolant hoses, wiring has been messed with. Look for signs of bypassing/modifications of the normal routes.

Ask for previous maintenance records but some people may deliberately use them to hoodwink you. Ask for ECO certificates of previous years. They are somewhat a better way of determining if the mileage is genuine or not and the condition of the engine.

Look for signs of coolant leakage (particularly for mud colored stains on the radiator top, along rubber hoses etc and overflow from coolant tank). open the radiator cap when the engine is cold and poke with your finger inside for signs of rust even if there is coolant now. Some people use normal water all along but fill up with coolant when they want to sell the car. Also see if you get any oil stains or gray color sludge floating around.

Start the car when the engine is cold and see that the cold start function working (high RPM when cold and coming down to around 800 when warm without AC).

Check the engine oil color. If changed within 1000kms it should not be too dark. Open the oil cap and see if you get brown colored flakes/sludge inside. That's sign the the oil has not been changed on time. Also check if you have lot of black soot gathered inside the silencer end.

Check when the AT fluid changed last. If done within the last 20k km or so it should be red/pink color. If it is discolored or smell burnt, either it is time to change or you may have a problem with AT.

Check for accident repairs of doors, fenders etc by knocking with your finger knuckles. If you get a dull sound on some panels compared to others that's a sign of repairs.

Check if the front axle boots are intact.

Take the car for a drive and observe the smoothness of the engine, pick up, suspension and road handling, brakes, bearing noise, steering rack noise, front axle noise when cornering etc. (SCP10 is known for noise from door handle mechanisms but that's common). Most of these things can be easily repaired but better to be aware. Also sniff out the exhaust for burned oil smell after a drive. For a reasonably good engine you should not get the smell of raw fuel or burning oil and the exhaust gas should feel like steam.

These are some of the things that you can check for yourself without taking the car to a mechanic.

LOL. Not only when buying a used car but whenever I am selling one also I use the same points to convince a potential buyer. I always maintain the past ECO records just to convince them that the mileage - at least during my ownership - is genuine.

How about the Swift beetle one, Passo, March AK12 (Beetle)?

Swift beetle model came from Japan as well as India. If you intend to buy one it's better to go for a Japanese. This one handles better than the jeep model. Spacious and looks better.

Fuel efficiency seems to be the same as jeep model. But I'm not certain about that.

with 2.3 Mn you can easily buy low millage Passo. But i dnt know about the car that much. Heared that fuel efficiency is good and internal space is also good.

I owned a SWIFT beetle Jap and Vitz as well

SWIFT - Comfortable ride than vitz hands down. more options like climate control and good looks. However very low on fuel consumption compared to Vitz - around 9-10 and the turning circle is very limited.

VITZ - Very economical to run with very little on maintenance cost and believe me its very much easier to re-sell
