Overdrive Button Clarification

Overdrive is the 4th Gear

its better to leave it on all the time,

The only place i could think of using the OD is when going up or down a hill.

*Up a hill to limit the hunting of gears (depend on how you accelerate)

*and down a hill to give a bit of engine breaking.

The Hiace has D3 instead of O/D and it makes a major difference when going downhill, plus on a 2 tonne vehicle like the Hiace its not a good idea go down a hill with all the strain put on the breaks

Yes i keep O/D on during normal driving or else it puts an extra strain on the gearbox

Yeap O/D off means There will be more gear changes, and that means more efficent and a smoother ride

O/D on means more gear changes :P

with O/D off the last gear is unavailable :D

Basically O/D means the final gear.. Leaving O/D on in traffic makes no difference.. But when you are driving 50+ kmph where you can use the last gear., keep O/D on so the gearbox can use the final gear.. O/D allows your vehicle to operate at a lower rpm at higher speeds and it gives you better fuel economy and quieter ride..

U mean OD on ryt?

nope off,

like i said earlier, you would need it when cruising down a steap hill or going up a very steap hill

i havent encounter yet a place in colombo like so.

in kandy and nurawaeliya, yes

Let me make this simple
when O/D is deactivate/off light comes on the instrument cluster , when O/D is active/on light on the instrument cluster stays off

You keep O/D on(light off) during normal driving

you turn O/D off(light comes on) when going downhill if needed when going up hill as well or when towing

If you are speeding on a flat road with O/D off its gonna put a strain on the gearbox

Does O/D off really give engine braking? I thought that's only on L and 2 whie O/D off simply stops shifting to the last gear. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

it does but at some speed

Im not sure how it is on a car, but on my Hiace it makes quite a difference. Once while going down Kadugannawa I had it in D3 and shifted to D4 to see the difference, it felt like as if I lost the brakes all of a sudden

Thanks for the clarifications.. By the way is there any SIGNIFICANT impact on fuel consumption? :)

I do not personally blame you. But you (most of new car owners) will do anything -even harmful-to your vehicle to save fuel. Thanks to new EFI systems you can't change fuel mixtures. Otherwise all vehicles will end up with burnt rings and pistons.

Not meant personally you!!! BUT YES!!! LOT OF NEW CAR OWNERS....(whom may have been upgraded from their Indian dara messa type motor bike or tuk-tuk. They will do anything to save a drop of fuel.

This is my first vehicle and what I can buy from my salary level.. For the record, costs me around 20,000 per month only for fuel.. :speechless-smiley-004: :speechless-smiley-004: :speechless-smiley-004:

tbh i dont see anything wrong with that.

Not everyone buys a car for plesure. some just wants a comfortable way to travel from A - B and it to be economical.

Could have been worse, could have gone to a Indian peice of shit.

For some people who travel a lot, fuel economy is a must. and 20000 on fuel?

Are you taking Trips to the Moon?
