aruntantan
Hi Autolankans, I use a Toyota Passo (2004 model) and there is a small button near gear shifter, OverDrive. Can someone explain the usage of this button?.. In normal traffic dirve should we turn OFF/ON?.. In highway should we turn OFF/ON?.. Schiffer
Overdrive is the 4th Gear its better to leave it on all the time, The only place i could think of using the OD is when going up or down a hill. *Up a hill to limit the hunting of gears (depend on how you accelerate) *and down a hill to give a bit of engine breaking.
Magnum
The Hiace has D3 instead of O/D and it makes a major difference when going downhill, plus on a 2 tonne vehicle like the Hiace its not a good idea go down a hill with all the strain put on the breaks
hrm
That's what usually "B" does in CVTs.

Basically O/D means the final gear.. Leaving O/D on in traffic makes no difference.. But when you are driving 50+ kmph where you can use the last gear., keep O/D on so the gearbox can use the final gear.. O/D allows your vehicle to operate at a lower rpm at higher speeds and it gives you better fuel economy and quieter ride..

Magnum
Let me make this simplewhen O/D is deactivate/off light comes on the instrument cluster , when O/D is active/on light on the instrument cluster stays off You keep O/D on(light off) during normal driving you turn O/D off(light comes on) when going downhill if needed when going up hill as well or when towing If you are speeding on a flat road with O/D off its gonna put a strain on the gearbox
NPP
Does O/D off really give engine braking? I thought that's only on L and 2 whie O/D off simply stops shifting to the last gear. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

Once while going down Kadugannawa I had it in D3 and shifted to D4 to see the difference, it felt like as if I lost the brakes all of a sudden

Schiffer
Yes, since the top gear cannot be reached the engine revs more which means more fuel is burned.

I do not personally blame you. But you (most of new car owners) will do anything -even harmful-to your vehicle to save fuel. Thanks to new EFI systems you can't change fuel mixtures. Otherwise all vehicles will end up with burnt rings and pistons.

Schiffer
tbh i dont see anything wrong with that. Not everyone buys a car for plesure. some just wants a comfortable way to travel from A - B and it to be economical. Could have been worse, could have gone to a Indian peice of shit. For some people who travel a lot, fuel economy is a must. and 20000 on fuel? Are you taking Trips to the Moon?
