Turbo charging a primeo

1. Why? Of course mechanically possible but will involve a lot of custom work with ecu tuning, also will affect the value of the car in a questionable manner

and will cost atleast 300,000 to scratch the surface than to be PROPERLY done.

2. It’s an automatic

3. Which engine do you have? And didn’t you consider an ECU remap for a minor power upgrade

4. Will affect reliability and longevity of other parts

If you have a 1NZ-FE engine..theoretically it is possible and a bit easier than you might think.

The Corolla Axio TRD GT (the actually fully tuned one by TRD, not the one you find all over Sri Lanka which is just the dressup kit 90% of the time and 10% of the time actually has the suspension upgrades); came turbo charged. and what they turbo charged was the Axio X which came with the 1NZ-FE engine and manual transmission. It came with a custom ECU. The Axio GT TRD out of the factory had 150hp or a bit more....as opposed to the stock 110 something.

So, if you can find those components you should be able to fit them in a Premio....but I am not sure if the ECU would actually work with the Premio....so you would need to figure that out. Finding these TRD parts is going ot be hard and pricey.

Why not go to a place like WickedEP and ask what they can do ?

Thanks guys. I don't know what the engine is other than it's 1500cc and car is new (2018). Everything is ok except the car is too lazy esp. on long trips. Very difficult to overtake with lot of engine moaning. It seems waste of money to buy a new and better car these days with the new tax structure. If the power can be increased little bit things will be ok a bit longer, hence the question. Not concerned much about the fuel consumption.

How can I get the ECU remap?

Doesn’t sport mode help a bit? It’s a heavy car though for a 1NZ

You can also try new Corolla sedan with 1.2L turbo (TNGA platform)

These things are probably going to be expensive...the hatch at delivery costs nearly 2.7 - 2.9 million yen !

Still would be cheaper than a premio?

Not really A brand new Premio 2.0G ËX Package" which is the highest grade of the thing you can buy starts at 2.6mil yen and at delivery it would cost about 3mil yen.  a 1.8L is about 2.2-2.4mil yen at delivery and 1.5 anything up to 2.2mil yen. The new Corolla is a replacement for the Premio/Allion/Axio and the prices are supposed to start around the 2.0mil mark (this was the starting price range of the Axio Hybrid range)  and the petrol's started around the 1.6mil yen mark. So in Japan it is expensive for a Corolla (in fact some industry experts speculate that Toyota will have to put out something like the Vios sedan in Japan to replace the Axio). The only advantage when bringing them to SL is that the taxes would be a little bit lesser because of the small engine size.

The photo you posted is just an old rendering. Out of the two face designs Toyota has confirmed that Japn will be getting the following front-end

other front is this :

Turbocharging doesn't simply mean slapping on a turbo on to the engine. It will require an inter-cooler, modification to the intake piping, modification to the exhaust and you may need to other parts around the engine bay to make space. This will cost you money and time, you may have to go back and fourth to the garage to get it done right. If your idea of turbocharging is solely to get more power during your day to day drive, it would be easier and cheaper for you to sell your 1500cc Premio and get a 1800cc or 2000cc Premio

Turbocharging a Premio will be useless and waste of money. Also it will ruin the smoothness, fuel economy and lifetime of the engine components. Make sure to check your engine and gearbox if you notice a drop in performance. Those are never meant to be performance cars, but are adequate for daily driving with good low down torque. If you really want to do something there are few recommendations.

-Install a performance chip. This would increase the performance by a small amount(less than 10hp). There are two types of chips, one can be installed permanently into the car’s computer and other can be temporarily added to the OBD II.

-Install an electronic throttle controller. This would cost around 20k-30k and will increase the response of the throttle by giving you increase sensitivity to the pedal. This would not increase the horsepower but the car would be much more responsive. The response can be adjusted according to your taste.

-Drive the car with a heavy foot for a few minutes. Accelerate more. This would cause the VVT-I system to squeeze out more power. So the engine would give better power.

I think the Premio comes with an electronic throttle control from the factory, AFAIK  vehicles don't  come with accelerator cables anymore

Yes, but this controller lets you adjust the sensitivity of the throttle. Unlike the cable ones, the electronic throttle of the premio is tuned to give the fuel economy. So when you push it a little, sometimes, nothing happens. The controller has different settings for fuel economy and sudden response.

Sell the Premio and get a Civic, engine has few more horses and the gear box is much better. Don't expect the same mpg though

By the way getting down a Corolla Sport GZ with all additional accessories landed cost in SL around Rs. 4.5 Mn. for the permit.

Approximately  Rs 1.5-2.0 less than the Premio
