Restoring A Lr Defender

xXx

Recommended Posts

Hello lads

Since of late there's lot of talk about Land Rovers in the forum. I myself am a massive LR fan and I've always wanted to pimp up a Defender. Can anyone list the costs involved in restoring one including an engine swap and names of any good LR mechanics and a list of places where I get hold of both body and engine parts.

Thanks in advance

I was recently looking at a few from a dude that restores for a hobby. 3.1 for the 109 and 4.1-4.5 for the 110.

And the listing of ppl would probably contradict the advertising rule unless Madz says its OK.

well in order to embark on the Project u've mentioned - u need few things

1) to be stark raving mad n insanely in LOve with Land ROvers :P

2) have a strong stomach n a fat wallet

3) buckets full of patience!

if u want to do a RESTORATION then the best place to start is a Series IIA or Series III

cost will be less than 800,000 to pick up a good vehicle - late 1960's upto 1985 for the latter

if u want to PIMP an LR...well i'd say PLEASE DONT - ;) but u can PERSONALIZE them quite tastefully :(

DEfenders r quite pricey - 110 or LWB 5dr versions will of the '110" which is pre 1990 are cheaper - virtually identical to DEFENDERS bar the Door handles etc

if u can get a 32- or 50~54- 1986-1989 model u can convert it to DEFENDER SPEC with relative ease

LR parts are easily obtained - email me n i'll give u few numbers - these guys have body pannels ++

basic parts are freely available at a few motor spare dealers - but compared to Jap parts LR stuff is expensive

engine swaps fro DEFENDERS are to replace the tired 12J 2.5 Normally aspirated units with 200Tdi or 300Tdi 2.5L Turbo Diesel units (+gear box n transfercase)

this will cost in the range of 400,000 - 700,000

Unless your gonna restore a 'Series" vehicle (pre 1986) dont bother doing ur own work - its easier n more cost effective to talk to any of the Lr specialist n get them to do up a vehicle as per your requirements

BUT all most ALL proffessionaly prepared LR's have Faulty papers& registration!!! its too messy to explain in the forum - call me n i'll explain

LR's are fantastic vehicles BUT buying a GENUINE one in Sri Lanka can be tricky.. :(

this is cuz virtually all LR's (Defender related ones) are like LEGO - u can take em apart n put em back to gether n make em into wut ever spec u want!

obviously it makes this very questionable from a Legal stand point n very unethical but its how so many good looking & special LR's make it onto the market

if your really interesested in getting into LR's gimmie a buzz n i'll be more than happy to share any info i can with u

if u want a solid running untapmered DEFENDER u should be looking at a mid/Late 1990's model wit FULL OWNER& service HISTORY running a 300Tdi engine & R380 5speed gear box (62~65- number plate)

but one of these will cost u between 3~7 million depending on condition n mileage

there are truck loads of subtlties n intricasies when handling Lr's so i suggest u enlist the help of someone whos handled them before u get serious

cuz its VERY costly to handle these n a "lemon" will make u rue the day u ever tought ur self to like anything with a GREEN OVAL on é grill!
