SN can I suggest you look at a Variant instead! They are much rarer and IMO better looking and sportier.

May I add quicker too with the 1.6 engine. B)

Never noticed that some of these have double exausts

Those are actually fake; primarily for decoration.

The actual exhaust comes out in the FRONT! This is UNIQUE to the VW.

As we all know, the exhaust gases have to travel a specified minimum distance away from the engine.

As the VW Beetle is rear engined, naturally the exhausts have to come out in the front.

Check it out when you get a chance, You will find the Exhaust tip right below the radiator.

Hey Guys thanks for the responses...

@ GTAm, I considered the variant, but IMO i'd prefer the bug..... but if you know of any good ones please let me know... (bugs AND Variants)

FYI guys, yes we ARE talking about the original beetle NOT the new one... ;)

Oh they are fake are they?? Interesting..... I didn't know that... then i wonder why, on every beetle i've seen so far, BOTH of them work?? a leak do ya think? ;)

and the tips come out beneath the RADIATOR you say?? and here was me thinking that the VW Beetle was AIR COOLED

Okay, after a bit of research, I've concluded that the choice spec would be post 1970, 1300 or better, Absolutely ideal spec would be a Late edition 1303 or 1303S..... these have Macpherson Strut/Coil Spring front suspension as opposed to Trailing Arm/Torsion Bars for the others..... as well as a better interior....

If anybody knows of any, please let me know..... and feel free to continue to comment... all opinion appreciated

Cheers

I somehow don't much care for the bug. I know its loved by lots of folk all over the world, but I think its a bit feminine

Imagine a high gloss black Variant Lowered with a twin weber 1.6 and rude exhaust. So much cooler IMHO  .

VW KARMANN-GHIA

@GTAm - is it just me....or does é Variant look far too much like a HINO Contessa....

Hmm Well, I find myself in rare disagreement with you here GTAm, but to each his own I guess. and that Variant is a pretty sweet picture....

but IMO, my personal picture would be a white bug with red, white and blue racing stripes and a number "53" on the hood and doors...... :P

The only problem is that everyone quotes over a million for a Karmann even when its in terrible condition.

Correct, and as i've told D_Z about a DOZEN times already..... my budget on this one is half that at maximum.....

btw GTAm, I was a bit confused..... this car was generally known as the VW Type 3 rght? i thought "Variant" was only used for the estate version?? please correct me if i'm wrong......

Er....I think you're right and I'm wrong. Type 3 it is. But I have got used to refering to it as the Variant for some reason. But I meant the fastback.

oh... cool. and im definitely 100% with you on the fastback...... it was the "variant" name hat had me confused.... as that version is not exactly a looker.... but i assumed you meant the fastback anyway...... :D

Btw, do you know how many of those are in SL? I read somewhere else that there are approx. 2000 Bugs in the country..... so how many Type3/Variants do you estimate could be here?

Very few I'm sure. Most must have rusted away. I saw one very recently in Batteramulla at that garage near the parliment round about.

Looked partially restored and not a good job from a distance.

There's is a very nice Variant (Wagon) on the Negombo road in between Negombo and Waikkal. It's at a auto a/c repair shop on your left hand side when going towards Waikkal/Kochchi kade. Maroon and seems in very decent condition.

Then there also used to be an orange fast back on the Athidiaya road. Don't see it any more. It's best you contact VW mecahnics and ask them to help you locate if you are keen. I'll keep a look out as well.

Well it's probably because the Type 3 never had a following as such..... not like the old bug.... :)

And Rust seems like a Generic VW problem in Sri Lanka isn't it? I've looked at a few bugs recently and one of them had so much floorboard rot that you could literally see the Ground!!!! as you can imagine, i did NOT take a test Drive :D (I guess it's the maintenance Habits)

and on the same car the rear arches were so rotten that when you poke your finger, it went THROUGH the metal!!!! :o

I saw a new age VW Beetle at 2.4mil today at Kohuwala. It didnt have number plates but i bet its registred

Couple of months back I observed a mechanic working on one which had been to the former agents for servicing and had been sent back with the headlight hanging out because they couldn't figure out how to put it back after they removed it.

The car was about 4-5 years old and on the whole the construction of the thing was pretty shabby. Panel fit was poor, interior had not aged well at all. Overall build quality nowhere near to that of a similar age Bora or Passat. Definitely not worth paying a premium for....
