Hi,

I have experience with e-bay buying and direct ship to sri lanka. Direct ship to sri lanka through USPS Global Express mail is safe and very fast. It only takes 3 or 4 days to arrive to sri lanka. I used USPS Global Express mail service 3 times to ship Olympus Cameras to sri lanka. But u have to pay custom Tax here 4 your imports items. ;)

hi nilantha!

im lookin to buy a camera off ebay, came across a few, im particularly eyein a canon powershot s3is for personal use. would u by any chance how the import tax would apply for an item like that?

I've had an issue once with a seller who had 100% feedback

the loser thought he can get away just because i was an asian from an unknown country

He got banned by ebay :D

Now i'm a lot more careful when i buy... but i always get it shipped directly to SL...

Over the years i've learnt how to navigate around customs folks :P

But you gotta maintain 100% + FB or foreign sellers might be a bit reluctant to ship to you in SL.

I've got stuff from sellers who have repeatedly said no international shipping in their listing

I have also not any problem on ebay and have bought many items.

Only word of caution is that if you use your regular email account .. you will start getting tons of JUNK mail.

EBAY....

Read the add & comments on the seller carefully b4 you commit to buy anything....

My first experience was a nasty one. I wanted to buy a memory stick duo ...& i found a great deal for $5 when the shipment arrives its a replica made out of plastic... not a actual memory card. And when I went back to check the add it says clearly they sell replicas... stupid me....

after that I have done about 10 purchases no problems..... as I first said if you read the add & the rating % & comments you can know its a good buy or not. but still its a tricky place so watch out.

I got a camera recently... quite easy via customs if you explain the camera is for you and its a typical consumer model. They might charge a nominal duty (like say a few hundred rupees).

Of course if it's an extravagant camera (say more than $1000 retail) you are bound to get serious charges. Just make sure to look humble and explain its for your personal use.

One tip: the customs people really know cameras. They know all the latest market models and pricing. (same goes for most common electronics I guess).

wow.. s3is is a nice camera.. also the price isn't too bad.. but be carefull if you buy it off ebay, make sure you buy it off someone with good feedback who appears reliable..

BTW.. why are you buying it off ebay? why not pick it up via a retailer like Amazon?

hahaha what is the conenction between you owning ebay stocks and you not having any issues with ebay???

Because anyone that has an investment in EBay, wouldnt want to talk bad about it because they would loose business.

But if u read buyer feedback you shouldn't have problems.

Very OT, but thumbs up on the Cam choice from me too. I have an S2, and have been debating the upgrade since the 3 came out :D I think I'll go SLR next tho. When the budget opens.

Well I have had all positive experiences with ebay and i do buy leads. This one time i ordered a JDM front grill for my car and got mixed up with the Manufacture Year. So obviously the part did not fit. The guy whom i bought it from the US told me to return it and sent me the correct one with no extra cost of postage, even though the part itself cost about 10 pounds more than the previous one! In return i left a darn good feedback for him. which i guess works better for him in the long run i suppose!!

THe only negative experience was when i thought i bought a Da vinci code book for 1 pound to only realise it was an e- version of the book. I thought it was a bit misleading, but u know...small print!!

How good is the S2 in manual modes?

U don't go for SLRs to start. SLRs are for professionals and real enthusiasts. There are plenty in the Powershot and Ixus range you could get. Thats why I went for the S2 on my last upgrade. Besides, SLRs require multiple specialised lens if u want to use it right.

Even S2s and S3s are a waste of money if u just want a cam for point and click situs.

Most of my pics recently are in manual, so u can judge :D I find it good, the only thing that annoys me is the manual focus is damn cumbersome to use.

If you want good pics in low light conditions... go for a cam with better manual control and longer exposure times...

you'll have to use a tripod though

That doesn't work with the subjects he wants. Typically fast movers.

U'd need something with a large flash :D

Otherwise, even the S2 is more than good enough.

fair enough :)

I've worked with pros who can pan and shoot with relatively slow shutter speeds but those were in low light conditions and not nighttime...

S2 is decent rig...there were quite a few commercial photographers using them until recently :)

Now the high end dudes go for leaf capture kinda rigs with digi backs :) but those are for super pro's

he he u got that right :D anyway what abt this S5 My Webpage

Or pls help me to select a gud cam for my requirment from this page, u can select Mp on the top left of the page My Webpage

U trust this site? They got both the optical zoom and the battery type wrong.

Pick amazon if possible, they have it for the same price.

Damn, didn't even know this was out yet. I'd wait for the review on dpreview before trying it. The improvements seem to be only minor stuff over the S3 on the press release. Main diffs are larger sensor and higher ISO and a larger screen. And the external flash hot shoe :D Considering the drop in the price of the S3, if u don't need those features, u should look at the S3. Or even the S2.

U might also wanna looks at the Sony H9 or the F828, if the price on that has come down. They have a funky night infra-red mode. Tho Sony's don't have the most reliable reps.

Zipzoomfly are quite a reputed store.. actually they used to be famous for hardware back in the googlegear days but now they have branched out a bit. I've never shopped there personally but I've always heard good stuff about them.

AFAIK the best place to shop online is newegg. I do all my shopping there as they have good rates and really cheap shipping. They are also excellent for support/RMA issues. I've shopped with them for the last few years and never had a problem.

Pricewise newegg's prices are pretty good for most hardware/cameras, either lower than or similar to other merchants.

I've also purchased stuff from a few other vendors but newegg tend to stand out in a positive way.

Just avoid a site called www.bestpricecameras.com

Thought the prices were unbelievable until I read about the site on several websites, and found it its a major scam. (http://www.epinions.com/pr-Online_Stores_Services-Best_Price_Cameras/display_~reviews) If you're buying goods at external sites its good to generally check the ratings at websites like www.epinions.com

Be careful of those also, cos some scam artists obviously submit good reviews of themselves to fool people.
