Jaguar Made In Sri Lanka

Hi Guys,

Have anyone heard about the new BOI approved project to locally assemble Jaguar.

Here's the link.

http://www.boi.lk/InvestorSite/view.asp?Ne...45&CatID=43

They are going to use locally produce components too (like MICRO did). I think this is a mile stone in local Automobile industry.

Does any one have any comments about this?

It is interesting the project will be based in Hambantota .............. hmm smells of the Rajapakse philosophy here ..............

and why Jaguar X types ? there is only a very little market for those cars in SL, might have made more sense to target the middle classes, and take the Maruti 800 !!

Impressing.........!!!

But there are very few X-types sold & any idea on what will the pricing benifit be??

They should have built a Maruti factory!

Regards

Dinosh.

It is a Glorified Ford, after all... but @ what price..

I see more 121's and Allion's on the road than Maruti.

The problem of making such and "exclusive" car is that the market is very limited, and thus how they ever plan to make a profit is a bit beyond me, as the initial costs of establishing such a facility would be high and if only a few units are sold per year, it would be difficult to make it a financially viable business !

also the typical Jaguar driver is somebody who has loads of dough, and thus have a variety of choice available to him/ her and can afford to be picky, I mean for example introducing an outdated W124 in India failed because the market that Mercedes Benz were trying to sell it to knew that the newer version had been released and would not settle for a lesser model, so getting suck clientèle to settle for a Sri Lankan made Jag will take some persuasion !

Were these jags going to be brought down in knock down form and assembled in SL or were they going to do any manufacturing?

slightly OT but Jags are horribly un-reliable... one of my friends B/new s-type is...

the bloody thing has already gone through full suspension repairs...some of it twice...

steering rack replacement and some other replacements etc etc

the latest bill is over 800k from the agents... It's a sound driving machine but it's record in the reliability dept is truly shocking.

Is jags are plagued with this sorta thing or is it just an isolated case?

The X Types are not too bad from what I’ve heard from owners - no major complaints aside from the drinking issues from the 2.5 AWD's :D

But the S-Type , especially the early cars are a whole different kettle of fish!

The suspension issue is a common fault - they just can't take the Sri Lankan roads! :( its not unnatural to have an S-Type require a full suspension overhaul every 60k

Interior build quality is iffy as well - components seem to wear all too easily... shame though for a car which has so much presence and panache
