sad scene...hope it wouldnt be as devastating as the last time...the funny thing is though as soon as something like this happens the whole communication system goes down...stupid mabile operators only have a very limited capacity even if they keep giving new connections all the time..wasnt dialog celebrating saying that they got more than 1 million users....whats the point of that when you cant even give a call to someone when the country is in an emergency situation..

Dude,

No mobile network is dimensioned for 3 million simultaneous calls... (considering dialog as an example) Network dimension is done on an assumption of call attempts. BHCA (Busy Hour Call Attempts) which is about 6.4 million BHCA today, meaning approximately 1700 call attempts per second.

Anything higher would come with a sever price tag.. and is not necessarily needed unless we have concurrent chaotic situations, or Tsunamis.

Just a thought.

Its not a question of 3mil simultaneous calls.. numbers noted by providers are the number of sold connections not the number of subscribers or the number of active users.. even though the 1mil or 3 mil tag line makes good marketing. Anyway no network will ever have a situations where every one of its connections are active.

Putting things simply- phone networks are limited by several factors including max number of call attempts possible per base station, switch/PSTN capacity and other operator inter connection capacity- these factors contribute to congestion. In an emergency all these factors among others come under pressure.

Larger mobile service Providers should have adequate capacity to handle emergency situations as communications has become an essential service. At least enough capacity to handle calls within their own network as the other operator factor is beyond their control. Also the size of the Lankan subscriber base is nothing compared countries like say India.

Financials not good? Well their only the number one listed company on the CSE who just pumped in $200mil in SL investment and spend millions on marketing alone every month. Surely a bit of investment in handling disaster situations may be worth it?

I donno.. maybe someone in the industry can shed more light..

Dude if it was the US people would have already sued the network operators. I believe these jams are due to selling more connections than they can actually support. And they make it a big point to shout out the number of subscribers. No point having 3 mil crippled subscribers!

The whole communication network is useless in an Emergency!

Agreed Madmax. Guess Pila pointed out the real scenario clearly. Actually the published numbers are the total registered customer base only. With any operator at any given time there is a % of non active & temp disconnected base.

Eventhough its true that there are operators who sell beyond their capacity, there is also another side to it. Actually for Eg if you take Location say "kandy town 1" the network planning dept will decide how many subscribers can be connected at a time thru this tower. There is a thing called 'Channels' fitted in every tower which handles customers in multiples of 4 if I remember. Heavy research & monitoring is done on this segment specially when the area or the tower is new. Once they identify a routine call pattern, they smooth sail on this data (rarely increasing Channels [capacity] if there are load of customer complaints). But what happens on a crisis situ is that this ratio increases tremendously hence creating netowrk congestion. In normal situation the operators tend to maintain these channels at minimal level coz increasing channels is very COSTLY. Remember they are very concerned on ROI. In addition as Pila mentioned the other operators also play a key role in something called 'interconnection' where network call transferring takes place.

What to do, gotta survive with what we've got ah B) this is SL :violent-smiley-099:

What I posed above are actuals.. I can't put up anything more specific as it is confidential. However, there are certain V*P customers who are tagged, and are give priority in situations that the network is congested. Meaning that at a time that all channels are utilized, if a V*P tagged number makes an attempt, he's able to get through.

Also remember that the entire network is monitored on a 24/7 basis and on a disaster situation the traffic mix is altered.

this is a pretty broad topic and discussions can go on for ever... I at this point I chose to stop.

Cheers..

Dont know abt US but I remember on 07/07/2005 london bus bombing (7/7 bombing)incident and just like here in SL all the mobile networks were down in london. I guess same must have happend in US during 9/11 bombing. But never heard anybody sued a service provider though :D

8.7 Earthquake off West Sumatra boys. Brace. Official watch issues, no official tsunami yet

anybody know possible ETA of a possible tsunami?

I live 2mins walk from the beach and last time around water did make landfall. not as violently as it did in the south and eastern coasts. But you can never be too safe with these things

8.7 may seem like big number but compared to the 9.0 of 2004 only about 1/3rd of the energy is released.

by last time are you talking about the 2004 tsunami?
