Nissan Petrol/safari Y60

One my friends is chasing to buy a Y60 SWB with a body permit. YOM 1989. Has a 4L engine. I was also impressed of the body quality though my limited knowledge on the engines didn't help him much. They are asking 30 lax.

I read a few reviews and Y60 seems to be a serious off-roader's toy. Though I think the rig is not meant for day to day travelling with its hulking engine and the wide body. From what I have heard the engine is torky even without a turbo.

Do you guys have any experience in owning or using one of these? Would like to know more... Loved the looks of this beast. :rolleyes:

way too much. i was recently offered a LWB in A++ condition with all the neccesary documents for 32 lakhs. People who quote absurdly high prices just have to forget about selling their vehicles. if people stop paying these absurd amounts the used vehicle prices should drop.

30 is too much for a short wheel base... There were quite a few LWB in that range.

Yes its a nice vehicle to drive with all round coil springs it gives good comfort and also handles well as long as you know your limits. If its the 4.2 straight six, then its a good engine with really good low down torque. Only problem with those vehicles were they were very heavy and like all Japanese vehicles the chassis is not that strong for 4x4 competition unless it is strenghtened.

I've always loved the long wheel base low roof model from my old days at school as they carry some character although they looked like boxes and looked dated against the more rounder shaped Montero's and Prado's and even Troopers.

If I'm not mistaken body permits legally is exactly what it says on the tin, newer bodies on older chassies

But in reality a lot of these permits were used to import vehicles in half knock down state and reassemble them in SL.

One needs to know exactly what they are getting before investing in such a vehicle.

Too much for a SWB. Try to negotiate and you should be able to get it for a song. I owned a Patrol Y60 Long wheel base for 2 years.

Pros:

===

- Nobody would mess with you on the road. No matter how much traffic there is you can close your eyes and just drive and no one will get in your way.

- You can look right in the eye and grin the bus driver that cut you off when were minding your business in your small jap car!

- Absolutely awesome in offroad terrain. You can hardly get it stuck anywhere (even without a difflock). But if you do you need another patrol to pull it out.

- Highly reliable 4.2L Diesel 6 pot. Can do 500,000km without an overhaul (bullet proof)

- Mod potential. Lot of aftermarket offroad bits available like winches, bumpers, diff locks, lift kits, suspension, tires etc.

- Can pump full tank of diesel and run for many years!.. 95 litre fuel tank!

Cons:

====

- Lack of parts in Sri Lanka apart from oil filters, air filters etc (Agents suck when it comes to getting parts for Y60. If you are like many offroaders who put Toyota parts in Nissans no issues!!, but if you are particular about replacement parts like me, will have a hard time finding them (interior parts, window frames etc)

- Body parts shops won't sell individual parts. Due to body permits they want ppl to buy the whole deal

- Slow and Heavy. Weighs approx 2.5 tons. But once you get some momentum on a long trip it moves like the bullet train. Good luck stopping it though! However, SWB will be quicker as lighter.

- Hard to park in modern underground car parks, high roof LWB wont fit in small areas.

- You have to get a bus license to drive one legally as most Y60s are 60,61-. Lucky if you find a 64-,65-

- Hard to sell. Only ppl who want a Patrol will buy a patrol.

After all I don't understand why one should sell a patrol. I am still kicking myself for selling it. I totally regret parting with it. It is the perfect vehicle for sri lanka.

2 door BJ/LJ 75 sells for around 2-2.5. So even compared to that the price is too high.

Ripper - day to day running replacements (oil filters, brake pads, air filters) are available with the agents and parts dealers and no problems. But if you need a specific part it's a night mare. I had to get parts like Speedometer cluster, gear box release fork boot, rear window frame etc. and couldn't find those anywhere. With the greatest of difficulty I managed to order the release fork boot through agents. But now I hear agents do a better job in getting parts down fast. But i dont have a Patrol anymore :-(

isam - what exactly do you want from the manual? I have the electronics parts catalogue for the Y60 and can get you diagrams of parts/part#. Also i have a sales brochure for Y60 in PDF format.

My dream vehicle in SL!

Went and looked at so many , but did not fit in ma garage <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

So got a Monty, but I WILL buy one someday somehow.<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />. As someone said - when you can get a bus to give way.....thats nirvana man !

Parts : guys try getting them from Dubai, a friend of mine does that and he gets whatever he wants as these are plentiful there. Not engine parts though as most over there are Petrol Patrols:)

Seen them boot it over a 100 foot sand dune called " Big Red" with nitrous injection and fly over the top !!!

ever see a Y60 in flight ? he he .

Check out Youtube - and be amazed. (Sorry no links et al as I am technologically challenged)

Sigh: I must start saving now ...... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" />
