Came across this article couple of days ago. Two new vehicle assembly factories to be set up in SL and one is planning to produce LR's.

Yep, the LR thing would start in around June... although they say otherwise. It'll be the new Defenders that will be assembled, and they will come with alloys, ABS, Traction Control and front Power Shutters.

And btw, if you are hoping to buy you have to wait till November as the first two lots have been pre-sold. :jumping-smiley-013:

Any idea what Volvo's they'll be making here?? commercial vehicles??

Yes, you can get the 2008 model for around 9.0mil inclusive of VAT. Thats a bargain.... from 24mil for fully duty paid.

Devinda they'll be putting out the Volvo S80's as far as I know

Gummy the 9mil one is it diesel or petrol???

any idea's who's been pre-buying these? just want to know weather its private individuals or government/NGO's???

do they have any plans to assemble any other models?

i'll take it that the agents both for LR and Volvo will be hit hard if this picks up huh?

The agents have a hand in the Land Rover assembly operation xXx -no sense in making any of the other models as that would canibalize the the sales of the rest of the range

The basic Defender only comes with a 2.4L Turbo Diesel unit now

The use of complete knock down kits has been going on for years in other countires - Spain has been building the Land Rover licenced "Santana" and the Iranians build the Morattab Pazhan under licence from Santana.

The Brazilians and Turks have been at it as well with CKD kit Defenders for some years , selling them under the Karmann & Otakar brand names respectively

BTW Devinda you missed Malaysia.

The other models incorporate a lot of electronics and software and I'm not sure whether we are ready for it yet.

Micro operation is different, as Devinda pointed out there is a CKD kit for Defender and according to the BOI agreement they have to be bought down on CKD form.

Well the agents wont be effected as the agents are the ones who have started this.

Good to hear about the new car plants.

Any news of the Jaguar plant, have they started manufacturing yet.

Please do post the websites for the new car plants and projects.

So far we have 1) Micro cars

2) The Land Rover plant

3) Volvo Plant

If any one knows of any other future projects and companies setting up shop in SL please do share.

Universal Auto Assembly - RINO Single & Double Cabs

Universal Auto Assembly (Private) Limited was established under Nipayum Sri Lanka – 300 Enterprises Programme in 2007 and is a registered BOI approved company located in the Hambantota Divisional Secretariat.

This project is a LKR 140 million investment that has brought in a new industry to the district of Hambantota, where the need for employment and development have been an pressing issue for the last decade. This project at the initial stage will create over 100 employment opportunities.

Universal Auto Assembly at inception will begin its operation by the assembly of four wheel drive double cab and single cab vehicles which would be built and priced to suit the requirements of the mass market, primarily local industries such as agricultural, fisheries, transportation and construction sectors.

The opportunity to export the assembled vehicles to neighboring countries such India & Pakistan through the Free Trade Agreements between the countries is a strong possibility and is being currently explored.

Regional distributors will be appointed in key cities in all provincial division. A standard RRP will be set nationally with dealers driven by commission incentives. Dealers will be equipped with spare parts and training for mechanics to ensure proper service to undertake any complexities that would arise from the usage of the vehicle, this would ensure that the custom would have minimum down time if the vehicle were to meet with an accident or has any complexities.

Guy s i found out that the Rino single cab goes for 13.50+vat That s like 15.00

And the double cab goes for 33.50+vat So that s like 35.00 They have showed it in a machinery exhibition in BM#CH.

Build quality of the single cab is really good compared to the T#T# single cab and also both single and double cabs comes in standered full option.

But there are no 4WD versions available yet they say. :)
