the Alfetta :)

Oh not out yet :( . Just a matter of putting everything together and the wiring, but no co-operation from the mechanics. Trying to have it ready by the Motor show in Oct....but I said this last year as well :o .

Not sure how it does on fuel. Never ever driven it as I bought it in a dismantled state....... Can't be very good though.... 2.0, 130bhp with twin choke twin Del'Ortos, if my lighter Giulia 1600 is anything to go by...... :D

  • 3 weeks later...

I just saw a Trueno today, for sale! Asking price is 630,000.It's the original red/black two tone with White stripes in the center (a bit weird). I've seen this around, but never close enough to see the rear brakes. I wonder if it's a genuine 4AGE engined version with rear discs or the lower powered version with rear drum brakes. I've seen alot of those versions for sale!

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

hmmm Don why don't you point them in Pradfred and the Ford/Mazda clubs direction?

it owuld be nice to see some old Fords at those meets :)

is this car based is Moratuwa or Ratmalana by any chance? recall seeing an Orange Cortine much like this in that neighourhood...

Dev

I did speak to the owner of the black cortina - who promised that he / person who bought it would come for the meet but did not turn up.

A Mk1 escort and a Capri did though, and there will be more old fords next time. Bank on it.

Two of the best modified cars were out of action last time, but next time will make an appearance.

So when do I take you Ford hunting eh ? better than wild boar

I love the Panda coloue scheme. The trueno was Toyota's most affordable sports car- where are their sales tactics now,eh?

Nyways, does anyone know about the sale version's rear brakes?

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi GTam,

I have a 156 Twin Spark in my workshop right now. I am sorry but it is a pain to work on and the parts are hard to come by if not common to Fiat as well! I can't say I like it at all, but an aqquired taste it may be. This car is 1996 with ABS etc. I am struggling to get exited by it! At the same time I have a Peugeot 206 1.6HDI Quicksilver and man it is proper pocket rocket, Can wheel spin on 1st, 2nd and 3rd! And it is a Diesel-55+ MPG with pretty good handling and parts not too expensive. A nice little car! A very limited edition I fancy buying it off the current ownner if he is selling. Once I had a 205 GTI 1.6 which was also a pure dream to drive and was a far better handling car than my current Golf GTI MK3.

Know anyone with a decent Peugeot 203 for me to have a drive in when I am next in SL. I used to drive my fathers in the late 70's and early 80's and still hanker for another drive in one.

I am in SL during August, so let me know!

Maithri.

Maithri, I recently thought about you when a friend who has recently brought a car inquired about a good automotive workshop and I thought about yours. Where are you based ? and how can one get to your workshop ? If you do not mind could you share your contact details please.

Hi Maithri

Sorry for delay in replying have not been online for a while. First and foremost the 156 was launched in 1997 and the UK got it a year later I think. So you've either made a mistake with the model or the year. ABS was standard.

I'm surprised that you are having poblems with spares in UK(?) when we have hardly an issue over here. Sorry I can't offer any ideas on this......

You can't really compare a 156 (if it is the car you refer to) with a 206. They are in two different classes. They driving thills they offer are different as well. The Alfa is a compact exec saloon like a BMW 3 and the 206 HDI is a much smaller warm hatch. Yes the 206 handles well. We (my father) owned a NA 1.9D. And even though under powered it was very good to drive compared to lots of Japanese cars in that class and even a bit higher.

I had a 97 Mazda Familia TDI at the same time. And whenever I travelled up-country I prefered to take the Pug. Even though it was less powerful than the Maz it was a joy to drive and used to flow down the road unlike the nose heavy Mazda which was fine when the road was straight but ragged when it was not. Will never foget how one of my friends were speechless when we had a friendly race from Kotte to Bamba, when he got out of his EK3 EXi Civic and looked at the car in a confused way :D .

But the 206 gave us endless trouble and we sold it in disgust. The agents were no help at all. It seemed to have a design flaw and kept snapping it's belt. And then with less than 20k miles on the clock the engine went bust! We repaired it and sold it. It must have been an isolated case but we had had enough.

In contrast the Alfas have been surprisingly reliable for me  . As for the driving experience.........it's really in another world. IMHO of course. I would agree with you........an aquired taste and sometimes it takes time to learn what the fuss is all about.

Lucky you to have owned a 205 GTI. Ppl are still raving about the car. Some time back I got to drive a 306 XSi and if that's anything to go by I can just imagine what a 205 will be like  .

There are lots of 203s around and the number of restored ones keep increasing all the time. I don't know anyone close enough to get you (or even me :D ) a drive, but I can introduce you to a few owners who are very passionate about their machines.

Sorry all you guys and any girls for the delay in replying, AND GT AM I was not comparing the Pug with the Alfa, 2 different cars from different sectors of the UK market place. Alfa's do not sell well in the UK due to their quirky nature. The dealers are pretty useless and residual values after a few years are very low. We do not see enough of them to really develop our skills so we stick to basic work as much as possible. Some garage's will refuse to work on them.

Still a passionate band of followers will buy and run them and enjoy the lovely ride.

Having owned a fair few Pug's from 404's,504's,to 205 GTI, the 205 was the outstanding one and the closest car I drove from the peugeot stable was a 306 GTI6! since.

I thought Mazda's had good suspensions, compared to many other Jap cars!

My garage is in the Midlands In Wellingborough 01933 676788.

I would love to see some nice Pug 203's Give me a contact to call or email I will be in SL on the 2nd of August.

Hope I answered all of you, apologies if I missed any.

Maithri.

Hey Maithri you're absolutely right about the dealers. They the most notoious in the industry. So were ours when we had one :D. Anyway I hear that they've restructured the dealership drastically in the UK and they're showing positive results already with sales increasing despite a small and aging range and the factory closure for upgrading.

Actually the UK is the only country where they've increased sales this year so far, despite cutting down the number of dealers.

Ah yes the GTi-6. I've read rave reviews about the car. One about how it held onto the bumper of a 911 on wet twisty roads.

The new Mazdas are definitely very good. But that one was a few notches below the finesse of the Pug in terms of dynamics.

I'm sure Devinda will put you in touch with the 203 club! Those guys seem very enthusiastic.
