Welding a fuel tank unless all precautions are taken is suicide. (A known party blew his head off welding a motorcycle tank a few years ago).

The welder is right. Araldite or JB Weld will solve the issue. But rust forming indicates that there is a water in the tank.

yep...it's gotta be properly flushed a few times and them left to aerate for a day or two to get all the fumes out before getting it even near a welding torch.

Cold welding with epoxy would be the fastest fix but might not be the best

Mr. Sumith,

I have done more than 50 Petrol and Diesel tanks bottom welding.

What I do is remove the tank empty all fuel on same then allow to dry up one day under hot sun before welding examine the tank has no fuel in.

The tank has to be filled full of water close the filling side turn up to do the welding remove the drain plug.

Clean nicely the corroded part weld with brass the leaking area or use a new patch of 20 SWG Iron sheet on top of the tank corroded area and do a brass welding around.

Gasoline tank welding is extremely dangerous and considered as the final resource to answer a minor leak.Never DIY unless you have done it many times and still alive and carry no burn scars.

Always should try a good epoxy hardener on an emptied tank.Your choice here is around 10 good brands in open market. My favorite is “Metalset” ,sourced from my workplace. A rare find in SL openmarket.

If failed with epoxy magic, remove tank, fill it water, empty and repeat the procedure atleast twice .Then give a good compressed air “blowjob” :P before allowing tank to dry in sunlight.

Then your welder can use his options of type of welding.Make sure you choose a good welder with job type experience and you may sip a beer well away when he is doing his job

Finally,is it compulsory to bring up ,your previous know-hows and how many times you’ve done it before responding in this forum????? LOL

Cheers!

Sir,

I appreciate your comments and advice about compressed air test that is the best with soap foam applied after compressed air is filled.

Soap foam test on the job done area as well as the suspected areas of the tank for leaks.

As I am all round technician I can do a job to my satisfaction as well as a owners requirement.

Please note that respect is earned, not demanded. You have been on this forum a while and although you do make various suggestions and recommendations most of them are unfortunately of the "Maka Baas" variety (A.k.A Rube Goldberg type, look it up). Even when you make a valid point it is obscured under a layer of guerilla marketing for your business as well as self important nonsense such as;

Get it into your thick head Mr Wijesinghe that nobody on this forum gives a damn about your "in born talents" as a "Qualified technologist" or your "asserts for net two generations". If you want to share knowledge then by all means share it, but be warned that if the people on this forum, although a lot younger than your 60 something years, have a wide range of knowledge and experience so get off your high horse and stop assuming that simply because youve spent decades trying out random experiments that you are better than us.

If you do manage to learn that lesson (wasn't it you who said that people should never stop learning?), then perhaps you will stop becoming the class clown of this forum.

Best regards

Mr.S_N,

Thank you.

There are some members class clowns of this forum.

Opinions differ.

I am still learning.

I never mentioned about a compress air test here.Never heard one doing and it is useless.Compress air is to expidite the drying and clean up process. And same..why soap ???

By the way is there any reason why you add "As I am all round technician I can do a job to my satisfaction as well as a owners requirement " thing.Im curious to know.

Once I saw a Diesel Tank being repaired at the garage. They drained the tank and removed the it. Then they washed and wiped its interior clean for any remaining fumes. They removed the floater and left it open probably to ease any pressure buildup within the tank. Even after that the welder was so very cautious welding it. I was wondering why. Now I get it. :) I saw them welding it and putting some kind of eproxy from outside the tank to finish the job. Not sure whether that's the correct way of doing the job though.

The interior of the tank looked as if it is brand new. But there were tiny holes near the drain plug. The mechanic at the garage said it is best to avoid welding the tank coz the torch would burn the protective layer inside the tank (TIN ?), and they do it only when there is no other solution.
