Hi guys,

I'm looking for a car and would like to know your suggestions for my budget of 1.2 million. A manual transmission is preffered. Besides that, anything less that 11 years old would be good. BTW i'm 6'4" so I would need something that I can fit into.

Less than 11 years old is gonna be a tad bit of a challenge for 1.2 million if im being honest.... such i the market situ over here, unless you're willing to consider hyundais and the like.

Actually, you can get plenty of the older hyundai sonatas in that range, whether it would actually be adviseable to buy one is another matter.

If you do some searching you should be able to get hold of a late A32 cefiro like isurus, nice car and will serve you well if looked after properly..

Thats all i can think of at present. Will do some more digging and see, Any ideas gents?

Oops, didn't see that part.... 'scusi!

Well guys, I went out looking and had a friend at a finance company offer me a siezed 2000 406 for one million. It has some scratches on the paint that need to be filled in and the interior needs to be restored. Torn seats, discolored instrument cluster cover, among other smaller details that need to be worked out. Although restoring the interior isn't a problem I'm wondering if these engines are tough to work on..... I usually do all the repairs myself but I have more knowledge in American and Japanese vehicles that european. The first thing I would like to do is tune up the engine and stick a new timing belt in. So what do you guys think? Is it doable for a guy who knows nothing about european cars? is it worth it?

BTW thanks for all the quick replies.

Firstly, you are on a wrong thread mate.. Should have started a new one.

A 2000 406 for 1 mil is a good deal, provided that the scratches you mentioned are not too deep, cause I don't think all other repairs would cost you more than another 150-200 grand maximum.

Usually 406 bodies don't catch corrosion easily, so my advise is that you work on the body first, to keep it safe. And then the engine, suspension, aircon, electrics and interior. (sounds like a good 2 month's work, but worth the hassle given the offer you've got)

So buddy, go for it. Give a call or send a PM to Harshan Senadheera. (Harshan - Hope you won't mind me quoting your name :-), then you'll feel good..

Good luck, and hope you'll let us know after the restoration.

why would he want to start a new one when it was he who started this thread in the first place may i ask? he started it less than a day ago by the way, so I really dont see what the point you're trying to make is.

@jdnet: machan the 406 electrics are pretty finicky and stuff like instrument clusters can get pretty f'd up. But on the good side if you know someone in the Uk especially parts can be found at a reasonable cost. Personally as a former user I can say the 406 is a lovely car to have but I really would think twice (and maybe even four or five times) before i would touch one that has been neglected/hacked... These cars respond best to care and attention so its always better to get one that has been taken care of.

Having said that, PM harshan. he'll give you the finer details.

Thats the only reason that i'm still thinking about it instead of buying it. The car was used to transport kasippu or drugs or something and was siezed by the police. No lie.

I did notice that someone unscrewed the plate above the valve cover (IIRC), seems kind wierd even though the car runs well. I think i'm just going to leave it alone and look at something else.

so I need a peugeot expert on this one. I'm looking at a 307 and after reading quite a few reviews it seems everyone complains of an anti-pollution fault. Has anyone eperienced this on a 307? is there a fix?

well said S_N. new gen peugeots are like babies as oppose to old rugged ones, so there could be hundreds of things under the hood and underneath where these fellows have made short cut repairs avoiding original spares and repairs plus expertise. Better keep that can of worms unopened by yourself. :D

more than anti-pollution fault there are other failures of 307 such as any electronic, coil and fuel pump and the electronic power steering pump. Haven't seen much 307's with anti pollution failure or may be I'm unaware of it. As pointed out in few other posts stay away from Automatic 307 since it's got AL4 autobox prone to fail/give up randomly as and when it feels like giving up. Cure is very expensive at the agents that is to replace a B/N gearbox and most of imported used gearboxes are also faulty.

So it seems that i've utterly confused myself. The car i'm looking at is a petrol and the anti-pollution troubles seem to stem from the hdi models. Have you heard of any major flaws in the manual tranny? The one i'm looking at is actually a manual. What are the most common electronic faliures in the car?

You would have to excuse me for all the questions as I know just as much about european cars than I do about about black holes.

no flows in manual tranny at all, they're as hard as old rugged peugeots. Apart from specific issues i've mentioned, other electric issues are random. It could be a/c stops blowing cold in climate control mode or speedo shows more than actual speed or something like that. Sometimes it fixes itself, sometimes it needs a diagnosis. Random electronic failures are common for new peugeots which have can/bus wiring with bsi. This bsi controls and operates everything from security system to signal light to park/head lights, so if anything goes wrong with the bsi these random issues will pop up.

Another week point is the com unit came with 307 and post 2002, 406 is defective.

Further, if you get your hands on europeans, and if you got right tools, you'll find things are pretty easy on them than you ever imagined.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all of your info. After much debate I decided to go for a Ford Mondeo MK3. I know that the second hand market for the car is pretty bad but I'm not really worried about it. I do like the space in the car (specially for a big guy like myself) and it makes me feel like i'm driving my dodge intrepid once again. I'm also pretty confortable with working on fords so thats a big plus. The only dislike I do have is the fact that you have to use the key to open the hood instead of a lever in the car. Will be picking up the car in the next day or too so I will be sure to add some pics here. Once again thanks to everyone who replied and thanks Harshan for your insight.

great deal and congrats.. it's a great machine and the best thing is it's built on the Jaguar plat form.

I can very well remember this incident about few years back where a mondeo came right behind inches length to my boot. Had to step on the brakes suddenly and so hard due to some stupid ignorant pedestrian and the next thing ran across my mind was I'll get a bang from behind. I was wrong, I only heard a small creek and mondeo made to a firm yet quick and steady standstill in a fraction of a second and driver didn't mind that at all as it was nothing unusual.

well it was a little more than the budget and needs good interior cleaning, buff and a little preventative work that I always do when buying a car over 100,000 km. Timing belts, tranny fluid and filter etc. I can handle it all so I won't be wasting a cent on mechanics.
