Problm With The Battery?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been using a Starlet EP82 for 5-6 months as my first car. I am asking this problem though could be basic, because my knowledge on vehicles is zero.

Since few days back, when i put the key and trying to start the car, i have to do it few times to start properly. But, once it is started i can go without any trouble. Also can stop in the mean time and start back without any problem. This is a auto car and I am not using the car more frequently as using only during weekends.

When i when to check my battery he said that i need to change the battery as it is old now (2007 is marked on the battery). Should i change the battery? I would seek help from somebody on this to diagnose the problem. Thanking you in advance.

Regards.

'manojin' timestamp,

Normally battery life is on petrol cars 18 months from the time you start using a new battery that also depends of your usage if you are daily user and service periodically check the battery charging rate that is the Voltage 14 to 14.5 Volts Dc.

All battery dealers have Specific gravity of battery acid and volt meters to check battery's.

I do not understand by looking the battery and it is 2007 year marked on the battery a person can condemn a battery.

Visit another Battery dealer request that battery dealer to test your battery with a battery testing meter load test Acid Specific gravity charging Voltage.

If they are normal you can use your car battery for some time.

I can advise you to have a small battery charger which will cost under Rs.1000/00 to be used when you park your car in the night so that overnight charge will keep your battery in trim condition for you to give a quick start with out you have to crank the engine few times.

Well we can rule out the starter motor and the alternator since you can start the car normally during the day after the first start in the morning.Might as well be the battery then, and three years is about the time a battery starts to go bad specially if it's not used frequently.

BTW Has your car's thermostat valve been removed?

When you try a few times, can you hear the starter motor / engine cracking (but it is not firing), or it is not turning over at all?

I don't know about starlets, but this is the kind of symptom I was having indicative of the fuel pump getting ready to die (I could here engine turning but not firing). I think what happens is that it can't provide the rich mixture needed when the engine is cold, but once the engine warms up it's OK. If a "thattu" on the fuel pump (no idea where it is on the starlet) improves matters then it would help figure out if it's the culprit.

Is it a sealed battery? One of those maintenance free ones?

'mirage7777',

Imported Battery chargers are available at M/s, Robert Agencies Reclamation road. You will be able to fabricate one with about maximum Rupees 1000.00 if you buy a 12 Volts 1 Amp Transformer and a Diode Pack to convert AC voltage to DC Volts with small DC ampere meter. I have not requested from (R/A) the cost of battery charges for some time. They advertised some time back a wide range of Battery charges. I make my own battery charges whenever I need same. If any help is necessary to fabricate a charger lease PM me I will help you on this matter.

If you can crank the engine under its own power, then it's not a battery issue. I assume your car has a carburetor??

If it's a carburetor model, check and make sure when you press the accelerator, while the engine is not running, that you see a small amount of fuel being introduced by looking through the carb. If not, you'll need to track the problem either in the carb or the fuel line/pump somewhere.

'Mani',

1st Question. When you operate starter motor if the engine cranks normal speed with out any sluggishness then battery is OK and Starter motor too is working correctly.

2nd Question Yes you are correct if the engine has a Carburetor there is a small pump to inject small amount of fuel into the Carburetor inlet chamber only on some Carburetors.

As far as I know.

Thanks Mr. Wijesinghe -- however I don't think that'll be able to fabricate this. Thanks for the offer to help me too. Any other place to buy this - apart from R/A? Any branches of R/A?

i bought a float charger off the web. can't remember how much i paid for it though

have been using it on my bike and the car/truck...

these units have a cut off so it never over charge the battery. and also it's a very slow charge so it's more or less like having it on the vehicle and getting it charged

Thanks Ripper. The charger you have described is the exact thing I want --for a vehicle which is used during the weekend only. Found that -although it has a guarantee period of 02 years --if not used daily --the charge goes after one week. Cant blame the battery I suppose :)

I've too faced battery and related parts problems few weeks ago. Charade G101 Turbo Manual...

1. Didn't start when I turn on the switch. Then push start worked. Took to an auto electrician. A diode had burnt in the alternator. New diode solved the problem.

2. After 2 weeks. Again couldn't start. Motor just like dragging. Charged the battery. Then started well. But when I drive in night (Head lights and A/C on) next morning same problem. Replaced the battery (previous battery 1 1/2 years old).

3. One week later. again previous problem. Alternator coil had burnt. Replaced the alternator coil.

4. Two weeks later. New problem. When turn the switch on 'Click' sound in motor but didn't start. After 10 or 20 tries suddenly starts. Two worn copper connectors in starter motor. Replaced them and now at last everything working fine. alc.gifangry-smiley-048.gif

OMG it was a nightmare last two monthsblink.gif.

'mirage7777',

R/A do not have any branches as far as I know if you want a small battery charger I will fabricate one and give you I think I have number of small Transformers and Diode packs with me. Please inform where you live all this will be a free present from me in few days. As I do not do any more electrical repairs have plenty of spares with me.

Thanks a lot Mr. Wijesinghe, really nice of you to have even offered. I actually do not wish to bother you - unless an adequate payment is accepted by you. I know you have offered this free and I truly appreciate it -- however I would urge you to take even a small payment. I'm out of Colombo at present - will contact you, when I return. Thanks again :)
