yesterday i checked out a Honda civic hybrid car in a car sale in kalubowila. 2007 model with 1.3 enigne..ODO was 66000km and they are asking for 4M..blink.gif

lol...they should be below the 3m mark as the civic leaves the auction block at a much lower price than the prius. As someone here mentioned to me the prius is 2.6m

I'll be thankful if some one can give the detailed Tax structure for Hybrids like Honda Civics.

Also anyone clear about this difference in tax percentages on full hybrids (like Prius) and other ones (like Civic etc.) ??

Thanks.

less i reckon given that the 2008-9 Civic Hybrid & Insight were being advertised for Rs. 3 Mn

Cuz of the new depreciation table, took it as less than 6 months old as he wanted a 2010 vehicle with less than 10k, and also the new models are 1.8L engines which mean they get a little bit more tax. Could be in the range of 3.8M I think :)

Yup, the Civic is lower at auctions as initial price is less, in addition with the smaller engine meaning lower tax in SL too.

Well you just got to give a few calls and get the proper tables, get a calc and punch away the numbers. :) I'll try giving some approx values, hoping there need not be so many new threads asking about tax...

Not sure about the full hybrid only getting tax cuts, but as Civic hybrid seems to have gone down in price and also the custom tables say 'hybrid electric vehicles', taking both Prius and Civic in same category here.

CIF - someone call T*y*t* L*nk* and St*ff*rd and post here, can't remember after I asked last time.

Correct any figures if I'm wrong as I hate stats, tables, tax calculations, basically commerce stuff dry.gif But hopefully this would provide some info to people who ask, and will update when someone provides other info :)

EDIT - Corrected total tax

Tinkering on these vehicles could be fun. The Prius I battery operates at 273v with nil voltage boost used, with the Prius II having a 201v battery and a system that boosts current out to 500v. The Lexus system is even hairier with a 288v battery whose current is sometimes boosted to 650v. Normal mechanical servicing is pretty similar to any car but once into the High Voltage area things become interesting with Linesman's Gloves being a necessary part of the mechanic's kit! These vehicles also present challenges to emergency service crews 'cos of the HV and the nasty chemical make-up of the battery...there is some interesting stuff on emergy response to hybrid incidents at:

https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInfoPortal/staticcontent/en/techinfo/html/prelogin/docs/2ndprius.pdf

Re battery life, the Cairns (Oz) taxi fleet have been opertaing about 30 Prius cabs and they have reoported 2 battery replacements due to some cells going low votage - 1 vehicle at about 350,000k and the other at about 500,000k - can't see the owners complaining about that sort of service record.

Thanks a lot for the reply, thing is I'm confused about amounts of each and every TAX. Great if you can give links to a tax tables, if you have any.

I also remember seeing somewhere about there are different tax levels for 'full' and other types of Hybrids. Cant remember where.

Btw when calculating charges for 'options' in the car such as CD players, Airbags etc.

Any idea whether they comparing with standard Civic petrol powered ? or Basic Hybrid Civic model? (Cos in that case Prius might have less to pay for optional extras, since its an entirely different car where even basic model will come with lots of so called 'options'.)

thanks.

EDIT:

found few links to tax tables. :)

TAX for a hybrid motorcar below 3.5yrs and 1000-1500cc seems to be 39.5% of CIF. (Not 35% due to tax on tax etc. maybe)

It was mentioned somewhere in the forum that tax reduction is only for full hybrids, but if that is so, the Civic Hybrid will be the same price as the normal gasoline one, as the auction prices are higher though the engine capacity is smaller. As I said, this is assuming them to be treated similarly.

For options, have to ring up the agents and ask, as they would provide all those tables, but it's common sense to use Hybrid basic to compare as the frame codes are different and that's how usual custom work happens.

You found the tax tables from customs.gov.lk? It'd give more accurate info as they usually copy and upload docs they have and use.

The HS code for 1.0-1.5L hybrids is 8703.22.51 right? Yes, 39.3% with taxes on taxes+CIF to be exact. Didn't check thoroughly earlier, sorry for the error.

And you're welcome :)

yeah that code is correct.

Theres info in " http://www.customs.gov.lk/hybrid.htm ", so they've given hybrids a separate section :)

Btw only Custom duty, PAL, VAT, NBT as TAX components. So no 'Surcharge', Cess, Exercise, RIDL, SRL duty components?

Yes those other taxes have been removed for hybrid vehicles, upto 1600cc. An extra 9.9% is added for 1600-2000cc hybrids, such as the Prius.

can hybrid use as a normal vehicle.I mean can we run only with engine?can we isolate electric motor, battery pack and run only with engine?that may be useful if there is a problem with motor and battery pack.

Machang if you read the stuff on this thread and the links that were given by other members, you'll get your answer in detail. But in short, yes.

Beg to differ here as what powers the wheels are set of motors instead a drive shaft in conventional setup. So if the motors busted/isolated there's no way of transferring the engine torque to wheels. But if the battery pack is dead there still would be a way of driving but it won't be economical drive as battery pack won't be able to store the charge comes from the wheels when cruising down hills or breaking.

However, as I've mentioned before, I've seen plenty of "conversions" where you have to alter the wiring and install a conventional engine & gearbox.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly.

But if I understand correctly, and you're commenting on usual Hybrids we see/hear like Prius or Civic, powertrain of these are similar to normal ones. Especially in Civic its just a motor that assist the operation. So I dont think there will be any problem using the vehicle without motor power. (Assuming electronics are working, in order to ECU to enable the vehicle start)

But if we look at a hybrid with wheel hub motors which drives the car, what you say is true.

Correct me if Im wrong.

Your suggestion is valid for the Civic Hybrid but not for the Prius at this stage, as the transmission is also replaced by a motor which would end up the car with no drivetrain if both motors were removed.

Wiki - An HSD car cannot operate without the computer, power electronics, battery pack and motor-generators, though in principle it could operate while missing the internal combustion engine.

Also starting a Prius without the battery might prove difficult IMO due to the starter motor being the same as the transmission motor, requiring larger voltages not easy to supply with a common battery.

Ah k, i didnt check Prius drivetrain. Good thing that Civic Hybrid got a separate starter motor.

thx for the info.

Yes so in that sense and repairability, the Civic Hybrid has the upper hand being a normal car and engine with a different flywheel, should any problems occur in these new cars and garage people will learn that quickly as it's very similar to the FD1.

You're welcome!

what are the taxes imposed on importing Brand new hybrids by the government? any one know the percentage.I saw that Sri Lanka custom website says 39.5% for vehicles not older than 3.5 year.Is this valid for brand new ones?

Now a brand new car is also less than 3.5 years old, isn't it? rolleyes.gif And as there isn't a way to buy brand new other than from agents and cuz many SL people calling Jap recons as brand new is wrong, yes you'd get 39.5% of the CIF as tax for the Civic and 53% for the Prius, the most common models which would be imported. But do the agents offer them at all to worry about brand new taxes??

btw it seems Civic is a bit pricier than the similar YOM Prius.

As far as it seems Prius is 2.5M+ and Civic is 2.8M+, but no body is 100% as all are 'to be imported after advance payment' type deals.

But once which are already here seems to ask 2.7M+ and 3.0M respectively.

Anyway from what I gather there are many Prius II (even III) in auctions but not that many Civics.

So that could up the price of Civics. But when u consider having a new technology like Hybrids, i guess better to have one of the more common models which will help in maintenance etc. But as we discussed due to technical differences in two this may not be valid. And also taking the effect of Prius being a 'Toyota' not sure which way market will go. :)

We might possibly get a Hybrid too as a JDM car is usually more comfortable, necessary when travelling with females as they throw up in every single trip now, so will post what prices are like later, and yes the Civic is much rarer than the Prius in auctions. Maybe because people don't want to sell them after buying, have fallen in love with Honda's? wink.gif
