True Story About A Hybrid

Crosswind

Recommended Posts

Here's a true story about what happened to a new hybrid owner (a guy who's used cars for over 20 years) very recently.

A guy I know imported a hybrid prius and proudly talked to his friends and neighbors about his eco-friendly choice.

Next day, when he tried to take the car out of the garage, not knowing where the reverse gear is, he accidentally shifted to forward and pressed the pedal. Unfortunately, his teenage son happened to be standing in front of the car at that time and the son's legs got wedged between the wall and the prius. On one of his legs, the calf muscles got ripped in to two from knee to ankle.

The rip was so bad, the calf had to be stiched and had to be re-stiched a few days later.

Now that prius is for sale.

My appeal to 'hybrid' owners - please please learn to drive your hybrid.

For the rest of us - stay as far as possible from hybrids.

Sorry to here that. It can happen to anyone.

I did my fair share of googling and Youtubing before buying my hybrid, So I knew all about it when first time I drove it.

You are my friend is at the pinnacle of stupidity. Just like all the BS about hybirds. How bad they are. How environment unfriendly the battery disposal process is. How expensive low friction bearings are. How gay the drivers are. etc...

Yes, it's light hearted to throw the gay joke couple of times but as of late it has gotten demeaning. You so called effing petrol heads jumps at the slightest hint of hybrids saying how superior your sappy petrol guzzling machines are. I thought this was a place true petrol heads hangout. A place where you appreciate the engineering aspects. How everything work together, how you do crazy things to your cars etc...

Hybrids are "new" to Sri Lanka. Except that Don dude who has driven a hybrid when all of us were hanging in to our mums tits. Good.

But, for the love of god, can we get past this menace and try to appreciate the cool technology that goes into machines? Sheesh.

Sad story but unfortunately this should be a lesson to all drivers and not just hybrids. It's no excuse that it was a hybrid, if he bought a car, he needs to know how to use it. It's as simple as opening the owners manual.

This type of accident can happen with any vehicle. its completely drivers fault and has nothing to do with any eco-friendlyness or being a hybrid or a prius.

This looks like a bed time story written for Prius haters! :)

This is an indeed sad story. However its not a question of a particular type of car being at fault. People mix up the 1st and Reverse in many cars. A Hybrid is not a space shuttle and the basics are the same.

Hope the kid will recover.

No point is selling the car, its not the car's fault.

This is a very sad story.

This is not about using things. Carelessness of the parent. Not only start and drive away the vehicle. Any one should very cautious when their kids around the vehicle or even near a road. It is good thing to take care even opening or closing a door when kids around. Applicable not only for using a vehicle but also for day to day works at home.It is a responsibility of the guardian and all the people who around the kids.

Hope this kid will recover soon...

I don't know why your story reminds me of another story.

I have a friend (let's say Siripala) who was dumped by a girl. This particular girl's next boyfriend (say- Gunadasa) happens to drive a Morris Minor.

Now, Siripala hates Morris Minors big time.

End of story.

Dude, even though I couldn't care less about this thread, have to mention that petrol heads are not the kind of people who just appreciate the engineering aspects of the cars and talk about how cool modern technology is... There are other terms to describe this type of people...

Oh yeah. I forgot to include bazzilion other things a petrol head is interested in. We all know the hybrids are new. We all know the parts are not yet widely available as other Toyotas. Yada yada yada. It's just FUD - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty_and_doubt.

It's the same situation where auto gear cars first came to SL. I'm sure there were more than a handful of stories where your auto gear car ran over your family members. Yes and that's the fault of auto gear technology and people just should not manufacture these things. How can anyone not see the abominable negligence of that?!

My point was, can we just fscking move on?

Something similar happened to James May. He kept on shifting into reverse when they meant to shift into 1st when he was driving a Benz 190E Cosworth due to the dogleg shift pattern unique to that model. Unfamiliar shift patterns really need getting used to. Doesn't the Prius have a normal shift pattern with the Park button on the dashboard? I feel the hybrid driver would have done the same were he driving a regular automatic.

Hi, John, u might enjoy this page from an American family who really are enjoying getting deep into the hybrid technology:

http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/

It hasn't taken them long atall to start pulling the hybrid apart and playing with it...cool!

ah yeah the german autobahn challenge.. what he point out is right.. it doesn't have to be a hybrid.. everyone should get used to a certain vehicle at first..

i personally think this a made up story from a Prius hater..-sighs- this seriously has become auto-hybrid-lanka

Heard CRZ has 122BHP. I know that its not much. But in for most of (less-fortunate)us in SL terms 120 -130 BHP on a car with a curb weight around 1100KG is a car with a fair punch.
