Dont worry about parts... Taiyo brings down body parts for VW Audi and BMW's etc... repairs well Ruwan is the guy, I'v maintained my V'Dub from day 1 with him... dont ever try taking a VW or Audi to some guy in palawaththa.... Indika (Alfa) guy also does VW's... on a low profile...

I usually stock parts from ebay and Rohantha...main reason being that i want the best for my V'Dub not second hand crap..... so when a part gives out.. i simply replace....

Remember if your planning to hack the vehical then ur better off buying a jap...... you need to love a euro to own a euro otherwise its gonna be a proposal gone wrong..very very wrong...... plus u need the balls to own one too.

So go for it.......

Indika indeed does a few VWs. He is really good and will not BS you. I get my Alfa done by him obviouisly and he is of the opinion that Alfas or any Euro needs to be used and not babied at home. My Alfa was babied at home by the previous owner and I had many issues. Now that I use it as a daily driver I have next to no issues. Starts at the first crank, every morning and every time. But like BoraMora said, it's a labour of love. Nothing can be put off for later. First sign of trouble you tend to it.

If you are not ready for that kind of committment, dont bother even experimenting with an Euro. Go get a Vios.

I have bought from Rohantha but now prefer to get it down via Ebay or pther selelrs who ship to SL/

But I have come to learn that an Euro bought from the 1st owner from Brand New is a good bet as the subsequent owners may have not used it and serviced it the way it was meant to be.

My BMW was bought from the first owner and he has not spared any expense. Everything was done at Prestige and its a releif when Prestige knows every nut and bolt that has gone in to the car.

My wife and I have 3 Euros (Alfa, Fiat and a BMW) parked at home and we very unlikely to go Jap again... :) They are that much fun.

So if you dont run it much it wont break down much? Interesting...... :)

thats the only way to keep it from having electrical nightmares. dont drive it!

+burning oil (that might be its because its boosted) and loosing expensive G12 coolant are added expenses too.

So you propose not driving them at all, at home like a mantle piece?

Be prepare to spend money on electrical items (window motors, power seat motors, wiper motors, etc) . Not sure about the TDI but on Gasoline engines are very sensitive if not well maintained with 5w-40 502 00/02 spec oil. it will sludege up if not. Keep extra pair of bulbs too (h7, 7506, 7225).

if you baby it and dont put many miles on it then its a solid car!

if you decide to buy and want parts, PM me i can hook you up becuse i got tons of parts laying around in my garage for A4s, Passats and Jettas.

Mate, this is the first time I heard your statement that the only way to avoid problems in Audi's and VWs is not to drive them? I am surprised by this response as I kind of remember that you live in the west. At least in Europe these cars are all daily drivers and most will do well in excess of 200,000 miles before they go to the special garage up in the sky (through the pearly gates also known as a breakers yard). I actually know the opposite to be true, that cars that get regular use develop less problems.

There have been some VWs which were a bit of an electronics nightmare like the first edition of the Touareg while others sometimes develop niggles, the most common I've noticed is with regards to the immobilizer (the key doesn't get detected) but other than that I've not known of these cars to be terribly problematic, even the old ones. Are you making these comments based on your own car or what do you base it upon?

i work for the automotive industry and i know how interms of engine wear longer drives are better for the car. i am talking about electronic problems that pretain to VW /Audi vehicles. its a well known problems throught the world. i have owned an A4 quatro for few years and drove up to 150k miles with added costs that i described above. i use to change bulbs so frequently that i know the part numbers back of my head. dont get me wrong had lot of fun.

Based on my experience, NOT driving the car much can cause electronics to fail (believe me i know). And the other type of electronic failures relate to age, irrespective of whether the car has run or not. So essentially you are better off running the car as much as you can to make sure that when the time comes for replacing parts, it will be fully worth it!

Many components such as electronics, gaskets and bushings mostly ware not based on mileage but on age!

As someone who is being currently tortured by the VW that is based on the same platform (Passat B5.5) I'd just like to add a P.S. here... Sometimes the whole damn thing can blow up in your face, even if you've followed every single rule in the book and loved the thing like your own child! In Sri Lankan conditions there is does appear to be an additional risk factor with VW/Audis, no matter how much they've been babied.

Or maybe it's just my own damn luck! Sigh....

I know somebody has already asked the question Supra but what type of problems are you experiencing with your Passat?

Quite a list, mostly annoying cooling and oil sludge related issues from time to time. It never was anything major until the gearbox cooler (which is combined with the radiator) decided to pack up and send water into the transmission. Chaos ensued naturally and now my gearbox is in pieces on the workshop floor. Thankfully early identification meant that only assorted rubber seals have gotten screwed up so I got that lot down. Now waiting for it to be put back together.

The situation for running these cars is MUCH better now than it was a few years ago thanks to steady parts supply and a capable independent specialist, but sometimes I guess it still can come unstuck.

Your car is an automatic? So basically a seal on the gearbox cooler failed?

Are you getting it done at a specialist gearbox repair shop that knows their way around euro's? I'm looking for some places that I might need the services of in another 4 - 5 years (being pessimistic)

Its being done by the same VW/Audi specialist that does work on the car machan. They know their way around it.

Yes it is. ZF 5HP19 box (The same was used in RWD applications in BMW E46s as well) Its a fairly good box but notoriously finicky if something goes wrong or isn't within tolerances. Im currently shitting bricks hoping this will sort it. I don't even know what the final cost will be yet. Open wallet surgery of the worst kind!

Well I have the ZF 6HP19 on my E90. The good thing about the ZF boxes are that every component is replaceable. I did some comprehensive research on this topic and found few sellers who sell the entire rebuild kits for the transmission and the valve body (mechatronic). The transmission kit comes with the clutches, bands and gaskets whilst the valvetronic kit comes with the solenoids, springs, valves and pistons. The transmission Kit from an outside party for oem ZF will cost about $600 (around $450 - $500) for the 5HP plus the valvetronic set would cost about $800. So if there is a reputed guy, its much cheaper to rebuild and entire gearbox for around 120k than going for a recon which could cost in excess of 250k (with an unknown condition) or a new one for 800k +

However, most issues with the new ZF boxes are relevant to the valve body, and changing the solenoids alone would do the trick.

I see, the reason why I asked this question is that most Audis and Passats sold in the UK are still manual (market preference) so their perception of reliability is based on that fact as well .....
