Hi All,

I love both Lancer C12 car (Atthanayake model) and Corolla Dx wagon (KE72). i have an idea for buying one of these and use around few months and sell it. What I need to know is which one has the best resale value from them??? What u guys think?

Thanks

KE72. Spares are still ample, does quite well on fuel and an all-round workhorse. but I believe it doesn't come with power steering, unlike C12. C12 looks better (at least for me) though.

Edit: didn't see the 'best resale value' part. even then, it's still the DX wagon

Some more info:

@ Crosswind, nexus, maheshw thanks for the replies...

finally i decided to buy a petrol DX wagon. What are the main things that i need to check before buy one... model (KE72 or 74), year, flat roof or high roof, options, rim sizes, engine capacity, 4 or 5 forward etc... and what is the KE73 ??? which model has the higher resale value...

Buy a 1986 1987 KE72 or KE74. In the olden days the KE72 had better resale value but that seems to have changed a bit of late. Both are bullet proof reliable cars which are easy to maintain and there is still strong demand for both so wont be hard to sell.

The irony is the C12 is probably the better car with better interior, options, features, more sophisticated suspension and arguably better looks.

For a car of that vintage, I believe you really have to check for signs of corrosion and catloy at critical places. You may also want to check for signs of undercompression. I believe any other problems could be sorted out fairly easily.

Newer the better (16- or 17- perhaps), 5 forward is more 'marketable' than 4 forward, 1.5ltr (not sure if that's KE74) might be the better option depending on your usage, high roof models of corolla wagons tend to fetch a premium due to additional space.

Regarding the differentiation between models, take a look at the link I posted earlier.

C12 has a better suspension than the KE7X as well as the looks but Corolla wagons were generally produced for longer time spans than their sedan versions unlike lancers. Therefore, spares availability is much higher.

We have a Toyota DX wagon in the family, still going very strong. Great on fuel too. The A/C does not work well.

Whats the going price of one these days ?

thanks... but what is bullet proof means?

I think that means durable.... its a simple car so the things can go wrong are also less..

prises gone up on these days so 17 - one will go around 630K to 670K 15- or 16- one will go around 500K.

Here have one for sale 17- ask price 670K its a Ke74 head rest model one.we sold our 16- one in 2003 for 325K.

C12 has better looks and many options which th DX wagon can only dream of like the RPM meter, digital clock, opening the petrol tank cap from inside,5 FWD (some are 4FWD 1.3cc ones which are not popular),better looks and good interior and its a hardy car too contrary to what people say

But the DX wagon is quite hardy and rear wheel drive unlike the C12 which is front wheel drive so needs preventive maintenance

As mentione by others you realy need to look for corrosion and engine compression before buying either of them

C12 cars start from 350 and go till about 450-475 (13-14 sri cars) while the 15-17 series costs anything between 400-60k

DX wagons start from 350 and go upto 650 (personaly i wont pay anything more than 500 for a car that old though

hope this helps

DX Wagon is a hardy car that you can use well. Try to get a 16- or 17- number & better highroof. This is good in fuel and will run well with load in it. Parts available too. We do not need to talk about resale value because any crap with a TOYOTA logo has resale value in SriLanka.

I can attest to the KE72's ruggedness; ours was purchased from Japan in 1989 with 40,000km on the odometer. It's still with us and now we've done 141,000km. The engine still sounds good & quiet but ours is missing the radiator cover. I plan on swapping the standard 4speed transmission to a 5speed if the gearbox is available locally. I heard it's a simple swap (plenty of Corolla fans in Australia have done so with their KE70 wagons!)

Cheers.

Hi Udaya,

The engine in the trusty KE72 is Toyota's 4K. Google this and you'll find a wealth of information (I'm not too familiar with compression tests so I can't answer your questions- sorry!) Ask the owner if the factory AC is fully functional. There's a fan shroud that goes around the radiator fan which helps cooling and this is essential to keep the engine temp under control during rush hour road blocks.

Also, check the body for rust spots. The usual places are the rear wheel arches and the roof drip rails.

Report back when you've bought/located one!

Regards,

Jay.

Engine compression problems are difficult to detect for certain with any other method than a compression test. But delayed starting when cold, loss of power and blue smoke from the exhaust are all signs of problems.

But the big issue is rust. If the body is in good condition, I would not worry too much about the engine as engine problems are easier and cheaper to resolve in cars like this.

I think Corolla Dx wagon (KE72) is a type of car you come across many of "mee car eka vikunana wada?" when you park.. :) I believe the owners of KE72 would agree with me.. :)

Surely KE72 is a reliable car, easy on your pocket when it comes to maintenance, a little not too good on fuel compared to modern cars with VVT, etc.. (around 9KMPL in town, some times 8 with 1.3L 4speed KE72). Most spares easy to find but some with help of eBay.. When it comes to A/C, no probs at all if you maintain properly and do repairs with a reputed place.. But not good as a brandnew car to be honest, since the beadings on doors get old and the cold tend to leak and also the glasses in KE72 are normal glasses unlike modern cars that reduces UV and solar heat.. (But u can to a 3M christaline tint which does all that UV cut and solar heat reduction and still not spoil the original look, but will cost you around 40K (Remember KE72 has lot of glasses, since its a station wagon)..

Hi Kmeeg,

Thanks for your information regarding the mechanic. Unfortunately, my father wanted to revisit the mechanic who attended to our KE72 to for the past 12 years so couldn't go to yours. I've noted the details and will visit him when the need arises!

Thanks again for sharing his details.

Regards.
