Genuine Vs Original

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Can someone give me info on how these two differ?

I have been doing a spare part search and came up across these two words. It's a bit confusing... (Read that genuine part and original part gives the same part number, but genuine comes from the original marketeer and original can come from any other!!! Is this true?)

Is there a quality difference with the varied price tag or is it the same quality with different price tags?

Thanks in advance for any info,

Genuine -> Vehicles Manufacturer made parts

Original = OEM = Manufacture recommended standard parts made by other companies (Japan made brands for japanese cars)

Others -> Different brands manufactured by other companies as substitutes. (Quality may be good or may be bad)

Toyota Lanka, Stafford Motors as well as other authorized agents carry only "GENUINE" parts.

Contrary to popular belief, car manufacturers and electronics manufacturers do not manufacture a majority of the components in the products they sell. They purchase either standard components from OEM "Original Equipment Manufacturer" manufacturers or design/request to design a specific component/assembly and have them manufactured by an OEM manufacturer. Another dimension to this business is ODM "Original Design Manufacturer" who designs and manufactures the component/product on behalf of the brand vendor.

When OEM manufactured products are packaged in brand vendors' packaging and sold through authorised agents (sometimes these parts do end up being sold through non-authorized dealers as "grey market products"), they are called GENUINE. You pay a premium over the OEM part for branding and a certain degree of assured/perceived quality.

When the OEM's directly sell the part under their own brands, they are called ORIGINAL or OEM parts. For example, NSK makes bearings for Toyota vehicles. While Toyota branded NSK bearings are called GENUINE, the same bearing sold in NSK packaging is called ORIGINAL.

The third category of parts is "Aftermarket" which are reverse engineered components manufactured by parties which are not the suppliers of the said component to the manufacturer.

Here is a good read on the different categories of parts:

Just thought of adding my experience with components manufacturing.

Once I worked for a BOI company which manufacture aviation cargo parts.

We produced cargo parts for "Airbus" as well as "Boeing" aeroplanes.

For Airbus, we directly manufactured 'Genuine' parts . Everything is under full supervision by Airbus. They even separately carried out audits by them self.

For Boeing we manufactured after market parts. So there were no direct involvement by Boeing such as Airbus does, as far as I know.

However for both groups, had to have all aviation safety certificates and had to maintain the highest quality and the highest accuracy.

One of the senior members of Autolanka is still there (now not active in the forum) as a lead engineer and I could identify him immediatly when I met him very first day, as he was wearing a T-shirt with large "Porsche" logo. (Hadawathinma AutoLankikai). ;) (Praveen already given me the hint)

Great explanation. This applies to the lubricating oil also, Porsche branded oil is Mobil in disguise. Not sure but Toyota Oil is supposed to be Shell.
