How To Get Rid Of Faded Paint?

Hi guys,

I'm using a Mitsubishi ASP Model for more than two years now. The space at my home garage was not enough to cover the full car from sunlight (had to install a large roof recently).

Ok, the problem is the front of my car paint is faded (not everywhere but mostly on the sides and mid of the bonnet. The top of the bonnet is not smoother than earlier (its rough).

Is there any way to get rid of this without doing a full body paint? I went through few youtube videos and there are ways to remove faded paint (using component, wax, polish, etc).

You can try a cut and polish from a car detail place, or buy some polish and have a go at it yourself.

The idea is to take a very thin layer of paint off, so that the sun burnt layer is removed exposing the good pain underneath.

Is the car red or a metallic colour? I've seen with metalic paint sometimes the clear laquer layer is burnt right through. If thats the case a touch up of that area will be necessary with new paint and clear laquer

I had the same issue with my dickey lid... tried almost everything... if the paint has faded slightly I think you can recover it... else you need to do a paint... and u dont need to do a full paint. You can just paint only that panel.

Normal price range for panel would vary from 3500 - 7500. If you are lucky you can get it done even for lower price than that.

Its Silver (original color also the same).

I heard that some use Component to apply on the faded area then apply polish then wax. I'm not sure, but saw in the YouTube video.

Any brand to use as the component, polish and wax?

I think you are referring to rubbing compound. it's not 'component'.

so many brands of car detailing products out there in the market.

Turtle wax, Simoniz and Abro to name a few.

However for your job i suggest finer compound and recommend something with Carnuba for waxing.

First, use water sandpaper of 1200 - 2000 grit or to cut away the top layer of paint. Have water constantly running on the paint as you sand. Be really gentle. The paint will start to look dull after this step.

Next, use 3M rubbing compound to bring back the shine. Finally, apply a wax (3M, Turtlewax etc.) according to the instructions on the packaging.

This will only work if the damage is at the top of the paint layer (clear coat). You'll have to consider a respray as The Don has mentioned if the paint is also burnt.

Tell me a good rubbing compound and a wax can purchase for a good price. I'm from Moratuwa and great if you could tell me the price as well. Do I need to apply polish as well?

Can I do it by myself? Do I need to use any item to rub and wax ?

And, do I need a buffering machine too? I know it is not that easy to rub the entire car body by hand. Are there any places rent them? I'm from Moratuwa.

What I'm trying to do is, use a Rubbing compound to remove the faded/burnt area, then wash the car. After the car dried, apply a Wax by using a cloth. THe only problem I have is buffering machine.

And, do I need to use Water Sandpapers with Rubbing Compound? Any other option?

Gosh, I thought my earlier reply made sense. Let me try again:

Good brands are not cheap. Good brands are what I have mentioned in my earlier post (3M rubbing compound and Turtle Wax). There are other brands like EagleOne and MARPA which are also okay.

I'm from Moratuwa and great if you could tell me the price as well. Do I need to apply polish as well?

Moratuwa is not some rural area where you are unable to find stuff easily. Just drive to the nearest auto spare parts shop and ask them for the above parts. They are available in Arpico Supercenters and even in some Cargills supermarkets.

No one on the forum keeps a log of rubbing compound prices and wax prices machan, just drive there and find out for yourself!

Of course. It's not rocket science. Let Mr. Miyagi explain:

Read the instructions on the rubbing compound container. You'll need some clean dry rags. Most solid wax tubs come with a application sponge. You don't need a buffing machine to do all this. Go one panel at a time. Take your time. Even if you do two panels per day, you'll be done in about a week or so. Better than not doing it at all.

Let me go over the steps once more since you sound a bit confused.

1. Select a panel you wish to cut and polish (that's what this is called).

2. Wet the panel with a garden hose, keep the hose running slightly. Tear off a small piece of sandpaper (say 3in x 3in) and start gently sanding from a corner with the hose pointing to the spot that your sandpaper is on. Be gentle to not cut too deep into the paint. After this point, the paint will look as dull as ever.

3. After you have covered the entire panel with the sandpaper, switch off the water. Let the panel dry. Apply rubbing compound as per the instructions on the container. Your paint will start to shine again. Repeat as necessary to bring a good shine.

4. Apply wax, according to the instructions on the container.

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 on all the remaining panels.

Machan, finding turtle wax heavy duty rubbing compound is really hard. I went here and there (moratuwa to Ratmalana) including most of the shopping centers like cargills, kheels, but I failed. Please help.

Try a 3M detailing center. They will have it for sure. The first one that poppe into my mind is at Kohuwala junction. It's on the Laugfs petrol station right on the junction.

@Davy, I suppose you can cut the clear coat so many times right? Each time you sand, rub compound on it it will wear too thin right? Is it advisable to get a coat of clear sprayed on after a couple of times?

Did you try any motor spare parts shops? Any fine rubbing compund should be ok to use to be honest. T cut, Turtle wax, 3M, Auto Glym, Meguirs. In the past I even used the CiC stuff and it was pretty ok.

Only thing is with CiC you need to polish the car afterwards to get rid of the fine swirl marks (polish is a finer compound)
