Buying A Vehicle Clocked Over 250,000Kms

Strikeee

Question

Hi guys,

I just want your insight about buying a vehicle which clocked over 250,000kms. Lets assume this is a SUV. I don't have a particular brand in my mind, but for the moment lets take the following models,

  1. Mitsubishi Montero (2003-2005)
  2. Nissan Patrol Y61 ( 2001-2005)
  3. Toyota Prado (2003 -2005)

if it is a petrol variant what are the pros & cons of buying such & again if its diesel what are the pros & cons..

Also, what areas do I need to look in to before buy

Thanks

Sorry if repost

Anyway modern petrols and diesels ar very well capable of running in excess of 250k. The most important thing u need to look for, is the maintenance record.

The highest mileage car I had come across is a ford laser 1998 with 365k on the clock. Its engine is as good as new.

To be honest most suv's like toyota prado , montero are well capable of doing over 250,000 , infact most of the cars in sri lanka never go beyond 200,000 k's because they have odo meter alterations done. I live in new zealand and most average vehicles which you enlisted have being driven well exceeding 300,000 km's some have even reached 500,000 km's,its a matter of having a solid rebuild and you're good to go

not sure about the other two brand but nissan engine is built tough previous pickup had done 500,000+ when i solt it and the current one has done 324,000. so like crosswind mentioned just make sure the maintenance is done on time and a sanity check on the vehicle when you test it out

This is a nice topic for me to answare..................

- Last week end sold the Mitshubish Pajero V46 220k on the clock and still strong and you can put another 220 on the motor BUT trans been rebuild and oil seals been replaced and CAM Chain due to replace (coz no sign) as its wise to change with the water pump on 4M40, on the Montero 2003-2005 we are talking about the 4M41 engine which applies the same principle

- Nissan Patrol/safari is a rock solid truck and you can put 500k + with no issues if you maintain it 4.2ltr Diesel is much better than the 3ltr modelif its a LWB (Never had a one but club mates have and its always whoo hooo)

- My experience with PRADO's is nice but some says its crack the head on 1KZ-TE engine (May be yes if you tow unnecessary load most time) and if you look after you can put good Km's with no issues

- Isuzu Bighorn is a good option even if its not listed here, Don't look at the 4JX1 engine as its got issues with Injectors and the pump (Please read online) and 4JG2 engine is good and 4JB1 engine is rock solid you can put lots of Ks with no issues

With a high Km vehicle pls check the bearings and other bits and pieces that is not put much attention

You can't see any Pros except for 1 which is PRICE you can buy a newer model for less price and if the maintenance history is good you can't go wrong

Cheers

JC

Ok, first and foremost, if at all possible buy a Diesel, as for an SUV you will prefer the low end grunt, better torque and fuel economy offered by Diesel engines.

Mileage is not an issue if its genuine and the vehicle has been well maintained. You can at least get another 100K out of it without a full rebuild.

Buy a version where finding engine parts, or replacement engines is easy. This is because some vehicles are clocked, not all rebuilds are succesful and worst case scenario you can swap out the engine. In this case the Montero/ Pajero and the Prado provides a considerable advantage due to their popularity.

According to the vehicles you are interested in ,you seem like someone working in the plantation sector. :speechless-smiley-006: Just guessing. If it is so, you can go for Nissan Patrol because you don't have to bother about fuel economy because you get diesel for free. And also it's one tough badass on those estate roads. Most of the estate managers use this one.I know one guy who uses a Patrol @ the estate and a Prado @ home in Nugegoda. Need I say more? :sport-smiley-004:

i have a 2002 Nissan Patrol Y61 with the TD42 engine with 256,000 km's on the Clock and it runs perfect. as someone said Nissan Td 42 can easily clock upto about 450-500K with out a problem, my old Y60 had 500K+ than that with very slight oil burning .

dont know about the Other two brands

Cheers!!

Be careful with v76 and v78 monteros if they have auto boxes. The 5 speed on v78's especially needs to be in tip top shape cos it only makes sense to replace a broken one and they cost about 250k each. Repaired ones dont run that well. Check for jerky downshifts and late shifting on the second.

Also the 4m41's let go quickly if not looked after well and need specialist attention

Also at this mileage cars with a chassis fare better.
