Question

HI All,

I have a 1988 toyota hilux, And it starts perfectly at any given time. And i can even drive it long distances too. However if you stop the vehicle after it heats up, (5 mins after running or 2-3 hours of running) i cant start it until it cools down.

Im guessing this is something related to the coolant temperature sensor. Can someone here please advice,

Thanks in advance.

Hi folks,

I took it to the electrician today because i wasn't sure if its the pump because there's no miss or anything, he pointed out that the fuel cut off switch in the pump is faulty, so i got it replaced and all is well now :)

maybe your injector pump needs a service. once it starts does it miss alot sort of like backfire and throws out some bad smoke before it normalizes specially after a long distance run. Found out that the pump had worn out fixed it and presto no problemo.

The issue is either with your Diesel pump, air in the fuel line (check if all the clamps are on properly), or your ring gap due to wear. Basically when the engine warms up it expands and increases the ring gap. Beyond a certain point this leads to compression leaks, which does not affect the engine when running as the cycle keeps it going, but does affect warm starting.

The most likely issue is the diesel pump though in my opinion.

In a vehicle that old, sensors have no bearing on starting. The system is completely mechanical.

I agree with the 'The Don': Its a fuel system related issue. Is your pickup a diesel? From the sounds of it your engine's getting too much fuel on a 'hot start' I bet if you do crank it further it will start after a bit of hesitation...

(I don't think your issue us related to the heating/cooling system or the coolent temp. sensor either...)

Had a similar issue on a townace 2C engine.. turned out that it was because the engine was worn and under compression. It was ok after a full rebuild.

If the engine is under compression, wont it be hard to start in the first place. This one starts from the first shot when its cold. And no power loss or something like that too, very confusing... sigh

it doesnt sound like a under compression to me. usually the morning start is the worst and once it starts its good to go.

Yeah if it starts first thing in the morning, its probably not under compression. Probably either the breather valve is blocked up in the fuel tank, or the fuel pump is faulty. Might be ok after servicing the pump. These pumps are not high pressure so sensitive to vaccume or air in the system as well so need to make sure all the lines are tightly clamped down.

Thanks don, if by any chance do you know where the fuel pump is located on a Ln65 hilux ?

Not sure, but most likely attached to the engine. If you know where the diesel filter is, you can follow the line all the way through. The pumps are repairable as far as I know.

We had a very similar issue with a a Mazda cab which had very similar symptoms and after eliminating every other issue

1. Breather being blocked

2. Air leaks

We finally ended up with the pump. It was an intermittent problem, and most of the time with some effort it will start. The mechanic pulled the pump apart, serviced it and it has not missed a beat since.

Awesome, I thought it might be attached to the tank, like in some petrol cars. :)

No machan its attached to the engine run by a cog on the timing belt inside the cover. Also do replace the injector nozzles while you are at it, I guess around Rs.1000-2500 per piece (x4), Had a similar problem and it lasted the even after a rebuild, then swapped a pump, on-checking the nozzle tips were burnt, affecting fuel delivery.

Thus the best outcome was seen only after I replaced injectors last week.

Adds more to the end result.

If you've done over 300,000km without touching the pump, it must be pretty much on its last legs

Apparently injector nozzles need to be replaced every 100,000km or so

Also do check if there is a diesel line filter, not the fuel filter thats commonly changed but a second filter on the line, hidden away under a wheel arch etc. Usually present in heavy duty vehicles; can clog up and cause mayhem.

hey tiv, Yeah i bought this recently and the previous owner has done nothing it seems. I'm sure the mileages is not what it shows on the clock either , I'll do the injector pump service too. Fingers crossed. And thanks for the info bro

on some injector pumps there is a banjo filter not sure about your model though if that is present make sure you clean it out well lots of nissan owners had discussed about improved power and acceleration.

I checked for that too, But i think i this model doesnt have.. And Theres no miss or anything :S

Update: When its fully heated up (Stopped the engine), I tried pumping the diesel filter, After pumping two three times, the engine starts back again with no issue.

Any thoughts guys ?

Either air in the fuel line or fuel pump. Exact symptoms we had.

Hi Machang, I had a similar issue on my Surf (LN130) where it started well on Cold but the engine just died after a while of running. It turned out to be nothing more than a clogged Fuel filter and lines.

This happened after I once ran the vehicle on very close to empty before I filled up the tank. Now I never let it get past quarter if I can help it. :speechless-smiley-006:

hey shai, i changed the fuel filter in this one. Still the issue exists, I'm gonna try removing the tank diesel lines and use a diesel filled bottle or something with new hoses and all. Then i can check if the problem is the air in the system.
