High Rpm (More Than 2000) At Ignition

SankhaD

Question

Hi Good Morning !

I am facing this problem for some time now. I checked this with our family "basunnahe" and his view is that this has nothing to worry.

More about the issue, car gets a >2000 RPM when I switch on at "P" and get down to 700-800 when I changed to "D". RPM gets normal after continuous 15-20 km and idle stays around 400-500. What I have noticed is this problem comes when the engine is cool and with the heat it goes off.

Some background, car is an allion 240, 2003 with 120,000km on the meter. Oil levels are maintained at required levels but not sure about descipline of the previous owner. I did a tune up and changed all plugs 6 months ago.

Is this really a something nothing to worry? Look forward for some opinions from learned friends.

Thanks.

Does this happen when you first start after a long time? If so then it is normal as the Idle up is there to bring the car to operational temp as soon as possible. If its a Toyota, get the air/fuel filters, plugs, IACV, breather lines, vacuum lines, throttle body, injectors all cleaned, checked or replaced so you can eliminate all know culprits that causes idling issues.

Doubt it is anything serious.

Welcome to the forum.

Your car's idle controller mechanism maintains a higher RPM until the engine reaches operating temperature. The RPM gradually drops to normal as the engine reaches operating temperature. This is absolutely normal and you have nothing to worry about.

What do you mean by Normal RPM? As Davy has pointed out it is the normal cold start behavior. However, idling around 400-500 is a bit too low for your car. But if he engine is smooth even with AC load then you need not worry. I addition to what VVTi has mentioned above check if the PCV valve and the Oil Conteol Valve filter were cleaned during the last tune up.

even in the cold start, RPM>2000 is not normal. do what VVTi said , it would probably solve this problem.

you can do a addition test, in "P", throttle it and release, if the engine shows some noticeable lag (ex: once you release the throttle, RPM will start to decrease after 1 second ), then your car needs a TB cleanup.
