Dear members,

Need a bit of help from you all. A long story short – Due to various issues and complications I’m now confined to a Nissan N 16 1300 cc ( Sunny) - Hating every bit of it :sad-smiley-040::sad-smiley-034: . (Now lots not get in to any bashing so sorry if I offended any Nissan Fans)

Could any of you please share some info on :

  • A good place who knows his stuff around Nissan
  • The plugs required for a 1300 CC
  • Common issues and what to look in to
  • Good place for general servicing
  • A location to download a manual – Searched but difficult to get info on N16 , they show up other names

Thanks in advance

You don't need a specialist for a N16 (same applied to Mazda as well but somehow Mazna gets away charging a premium).

Nearly every spare parts shop in the country will carry parts for the N16. So spark plugs won't be an issue.

Its a simple car. What do you want to find in the manual?

I guess you hate it because its a 1300CC. IMHO, its a mistake made by Nissan to release that model with a 1300 power-train. But you knew its a 1300CC and bought it anyway, so you are to be blamed!

I owned a N16 1500CC manual and it was a nice car. It got me from point A to B, never failed on the road and did OK on fuel.

For routine services may I suggest A*W P*tStop. Those guys know their Nissans :). And they have many oil options, including synthetic, semi-synthetic and a variety of mineral multi-grade oils.

Things to look for & do:

  • Front lower arm bushes (they break no matter how careful you drive). Check them during regular services when the car is on the hoist. Any garage will replace just the bushes for a fraction of price quoted by the agent (agents replace the whole lower arm :speechless-smiley-004:).
  • Maintain a clean air-filter. The car will reward you with better mileage per every liter of fuel.
  • Maintain a clean AC intake filter. (this is the filter which you can reach after removing the glove compartment) Wash it with soap, rinse away the soap thoroughly & dry before re-installing. Replace it if necessary. Even better mileage per every liter of fuel.
  • Based on the engine condition, if possible, use a semi-synthetic oil like GTX Magnatec. I have personal experience with that particular oil and car, is a match made in Nissan Heaven :)
  • Every 25000 km or so, do a throttle body cleanup and tuneup from A*W or any other respectable garage with proper equipment. If you drive a lot, you will recover the tuneup cost from fuel savings alone. Besides the car would praise you by running smoother.
  • Do the regular servicing.

That's it! Drive on!

Ahhhh Thanks a million – Finally some solid info.

Replaced the air / AC filter – full of muck. The fuel is not that great so would need to go for a tune up as u recommended. Can pitstop do the throttle body cleanup and tune up ?

Anyway will try Dhamika or Mario for the first time.

Yes it’s a 1300 cc – and Yes a big mistake as the car is large. I still do not understand why a simple feature like power mirrors is not an option in a 2007 YOM car.

On the question as to why I bought it – Well as I’ve said a load of complications :sad-smiley-017:

It is the face lifted N16 AKA N17 Sunny right ? 1300CC is no where near enough to haul that heavy body. I have the pre facelifted N16 (2001) with a 1600CC engine (Auto) which weighs close to 1200Kg. It has just reasonable power for my demands. Fairly comfortable in long journeys, had no complaints from the rear passengers either, apart from one time I had to haul 3 passengers in rear seat in a 2 day trip. The 1800 one really shines though ( N16 Sylphy)

Is your one an auto ? That should be a disaster. I have noticed the face lifted Sunny (AKA N17) has significantly underwhelming seats and interior. BTW when you say power mirror, did you mean power retracting mechanism ?

As per your questions:

A guy named Ravi near Kelaniya was mentioned in the forum. http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/15974-good-mechanics-technicians-workshops/?p=261430

Plugs: Since you have the QG13DE engine it should be using the BKR5E or LFR5A

Hi NRX,

Thanks for the post, and info really helpful.

My one is a 1300 Manual version and I think it's the N17 face lift or what ever they call it. Agreed the interior sucks ....

I live in Dehiwal so the Kalaniya option would be good for serious repirs - for small jobs need to get hold of a local place.

I've read that debug in Dehiwala is quite good, but would probably charge a premium.

I reccomend Pitstop for servicing and small repairs like brake pads, tune ups etc. Mr Dhammika Fernando has a good reputation in the forum as well and he is in Borella.

Read the good garages thread for some more reccomendations.

I used to take the car to Kithulwaththe P*tS*op for regular servicing and to Union place for the tuneups. Initially they did the throttle body cleanup at the Kithulwaththe workshop and later they enforced that its for "Suzuki repairs only". I'm not sure about the current situation though. Better call them and check it out.

As per what I know, N16 model came in 3 trim levels: Super Saloon, EX Saloon and Basic. Super Saloons had all the options where you get the retractable power mirrors, bumper lights, etc. EX Saloons had only the power mirror function and no retractable option. I'm not sure about the Basic model though. There there were some cars imported through Singapore (called fondly as the 'Singapore model' by the car dealers), with mixed options. I have come across some such EX Saloons with bumper lights and retractable mirrors (most of them had aftermarket reverse sensors installed) and sometimes artificial leather seats. Don't know whether these were upgraded or they originally came with those options.

Consider yourself lucky to have the MT car, as NRX said, the Automatic transmission with a 1300cc engine would be a nightmare to drive! Last I checked, model with the 1600CC engine was in higher demand obviously because the extra power really helped! Finish off the checklist in my previous post, and you will like the car better, or... hate it less :)

Sluggish , uncomfortable, lousy handling + many more

I'm not sure about N17. I have never traveled in one. But N16 (which I think is basically the same car) had OK handling and was comfortable enough to travel long distances without wanting to kill oneself. Maybe you need to check the shock-absorbers? N*laka Tyre House at Union Place has a shock-absorber testing facility. I'm sure there are many other places too.

Yes planned to do it over the weekend- noticed the axcel boots were damaged and skreeching sound (not often) from the front breaks - looks like a disk faceoff & new B.pads needed

THANKS once again

NO- That I could have understood. This version does not eve have the option of moving the mirror /adgesting it . Planing to get power mirrors instaled with switch later .

Ah! Can't argue with any of the above...but hopefully you got it cheap and it proves to be dependable!

Seems to be a basic trim level model. I bet your car lacks the front stabilizer bar too which explains one aspect of lousy handling. Super Saloon variant has it.

Hi NRX

Took the Nissan today to Pitstop- it’s not my first time there as I use to take my mothers wingroad there. But it’s been ages since then.

Changed all oils engine, gear & break oil. Did a T.Body clean up and plugs were OK. The axel boots were gone so need to replace them along with brake pads.

Surprisingly P.Stop did not have the boots, the brake pads and also the injector cleaning fluid. So injectors were not cleaned – However I was billed for the same.

When I inquired they said it was a part of the engine tune-up which I requested. When I explained to them that my injectors were not removed or any liquid out in through it – they checked with mechanic and reduced the amount.

Will do those through a genral mechanic and also need to get my fuel filter replaced – They too advised it.

Thanks a once again for the help – Got several doubts cleared through them.

I too once went to Pitstop to flush my brake fluid. While the workmanship was good I wasn't happy with their attention to the vehicles. One of the guys reversed my car to a tree trunk and since I was watching closely I shouted the bugger and escaped with just a scratch. On the flip side though, they used 3 and half bottles of brake fluids and billed me only for 3 :P

For boots and brake pads, any competent mechanic will do. If you want to clean the injectors using ultrasonic method, take her to ASNU lanka Koswaththa. They usually will clean the TB and other related things in a tuneup. Since you have already done that ask them to just clean the injectors.

You know N16 sylphy came with a 1500cc (FG10) too.

It came with a 2 liter engine too. I have seen only 1 in person. But haven't driven one.

Sylphy with a 2L, wow... I'd love to drive one, just to see how she does!

I guess, the 1.5L versions were sort of tailor made for people with a budget and to meet the cylinder capacity limits of some countries (like ours).
