Question

What are the pros and cons of buyig used Mitsubishi Montero, YOM 2000 - 2003

  • Petrol or Diesel one is better?
  • How is service cost, insurance cost, parts etc.
  • Will it be reliable?
  • What are the difference between normal and limited version or others?

Well the verdict kinda changes based on the fuel type and engine

Pros

Its a large SUV, good off road, good road presence, 7 seater, good cargo bay

Corners OK, pulls well (V6)

Of course reliable,

Comfortable

Bits easy to find, not always costly

Cons

Relatively expensive to maintain ( service varies between 10000 to 50000 LKR based on the retailer and standard of spares used)

Both engines thirsty, don't expect hybrid figures

Relatively old now, expect repairs, costly ones as well

Insurance proportional to the sum you pay for it

Tyres expensive,

Will constantly need attention due to minor wear and tear

All in all stick to a genuine car, lesser owners, lower mileage <100,000km and if possible standard spec imported by agents and of course agent maintained,

Try to get it inspected by a professional.

Being using montis for some time now
From the 4d56 4m40 4m41 and the v6
From the engines this model comes with the running cost is lowest in the 4m40 as it's shared with other vehicles so engine servicing is cheap
The fuel consumption is also low
But the diesels are much expensive than the petrols so if your going for a petrol go for a v6.
Anyway try to find one that was brand new imported rather than reconditioned and avoid the gdi
As mentioned previously try to find a genuine one with less owners and a millages that could be justified
Most of them have run to the moon and back but there are rare examples that were kept as weekend runners and long trip vehicles with other vehicles which were run only a little amount.

They have their independent perks,

depends on your budget and requirement

I'd go for the diesel

Thanks and yeah Im lookig for a diesel one too, my budget is around 58-60m.

With that budget you are looking at a 2000ish 4m40 diesel manual or a 2006ish petrol v6.
Well the fuel cost of the v6 will be much higher but it's a newer vehicle the 4m40 is a lot cheaper to run.
We've not used gdi ones because we always try to use brand new company imported climatized ones.

is GDI that bad? what are the main problems with it?

Even if they are good, they won't be 17 years later with our driving conditions. GDI got a bad reputation here coz of our high quality fuel,..:D

Well, I'd rather go for cheaper one to run. but its hard to find good one.

Cheap to run does not make sense with any SUV in this country mate
