Lancer Evo X

When Mitsu ran in GroupA they had to create 2500 street legal versions of the car which is what led to the creation of the Evo. Running in WRC class as opposed to GroupA allows the cars to be very different to the actual street cars, and therefore Mitsubishi doesn't have to comply with the homologation rules and build a similar car for the road.

The Evo VI was the last Evo built before Mitsu moved to the WRC class. This is why purist claim the Evo VI to be the best of the bunch... and why I an jealous of Evilmak <_<

I think they only have to make 50 units to homologate the WRC car. If I'm not mistaken, Toni Gardemeister is running one of these Lancer WRCs with the odd rear wing as a privateer this year, with sponsorship from Burger King.

Hopefully Mitsubishi will commit to a proper WRC programme in the future, or at least offer serious support to the Group N guys with the new car.

Pardon my ignorance, but "Evo" is short for "Evolution" isn't it? More than being a name it is a word that describes progress on a theme.

As this link will show "Evolution" was also used for the subsequent variants of the Lancia Delta Integrale (there was an Evo 1 and 2) which was a predecessor to the the Lancer GSR and Subaru WRX concept.

Yes. But the Lancia's used the Italian spelling of evolution, if I'm not mistaken :D evoluzione?

Anyway, there have been a few "evolution" vehicles, tho none caught on with the Evo tag like the .... umm .. Evo :D Its almost like its a different car altogether.

I think it originally was a Lancer GSR a high performance Lancer. Correct me if I'm wrong but the first GSRs were Rwd right? Then with each "evolution" it got more and more distant from the Lancer. Now there's probably very little in common with the Lancer. Maybe some of the floor pan, windscreens and lamps etc.

On the Delta blurb- while they are worlds apart in techonology, one can safely say that the Delta Integrale set the stage for the 4 door format (saloon) in WRC...with a similar road car coming off the production line.

Up until then, most competitive cars were based on a sports car of some sort (eg. Lancia Stratos, Audi Quattro, Porsche 911, Ford Escort Cossie).

On the Evo blurb- Even Mercedes and BMW used the Evo suffix for their limited edition 1992 E30 M3 and 190E 2.5-16 Evo I&II so i guess it only stuck with when Mitsubishi used it...most likely because it sounded a whole lot better than saying Lancer!

Spot on mate. I had completely forgotten the E30 M3 and the Merc 190 Cosworth.
