Where to buy genuine Suzuki ATF AW-1 transmission oil

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

Please recommend me good, reputed & trusted places to buy Suzuki ATF AW-1 transmission oil for my car. A*W doesn't bring down this particular ATF oil. or else please recommend me an alternative oil brand/specification to use.

Thank you....

AW-1 is a specification standard. So you just need to go find an ATF that meets the AW-1 specs. Most reputable brands ranging from Castrol to everything else (irrespective of whether it comes in a Suzuki, Toyota or Mercedes labeled bottle) will have an AW-1 compliant oil. Despite what many people think, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki, etc...do NOT manufacture oil. They just get oil manufacturers to bottle it for them under license in some markets (just so that the owners do not have to worry about wondering if it is compatible).

You just have to put some leg work around the usual car parts areas and see what is available.

Thanks @iRage

I tried to find AW1 specifications on internet to find a substitute but I couldn't find a reliable source. Also A*W said they do not import AW1 and use a substitute Suzuki (rebranded) oil. But I'm not very convince on their answer.

I did not planned to do full ATF change and only planned to top up, hence the search for the AW-1 specifically. And heard that AW-1 at generic stores are not genuine. So having a lot of doubts...

1. Suzuki does not make oil...so in reality, the rebranded oil is anything and everything that has Suzuki, Toyota, etc...on the oil can.
AW stands for Aisin Warner....which is the recommended oil spec for AISIN Warner transmissions. I wouldn't be surprised if AW is actually compatible with WS (World Standard) ATFs (at least one of it). So you should try to do some research to check which WS AW1 is compatible with. My guess is that it would be the same as WS oils from Toyota.

Do your research and find out.

2. There is no point "topping up" ATF (or any kind of transmission fluid for that matter). If your transmission has lost a significant amount of fluid, then there is something wrong with your transmission. Either there is a leak or something inside the transmission is burning up the oil. There is a natural reduction in ATF but that would be so little and takes so much time that if you need to top up the transmission oil for natural reasons then with 99% certainty your oil is old enough (time or distance) that it needs replacing anyway. You are not going to save any money by just topping up the ATF. The process would be the same, so you won't save much in terms of labor. Whatever money you save on oil cans itself would be a waste because you will be contaminating the new oil with the old oil, and now you just have a transmission full of dirty old oil. For whatever reason you have to do an ATF fill...just flush the whole thing and replace all the oil...or just don't do it at all (if your transmission has so little oil that it is about to break..then you need to attend to why the transmission has lost oil in the first place. Also the little remaining oil would be more than likely quite spoilt due to the excessive heat and friction a low oil transmission creates) .
