Hi,

First of all I must say I'm not supporting any political party. But after I've seen the article on Lakbima Sinhala news paper today (31/10/2007) I thought of appreciating good work, despite of who did it.

In that article President has announced that starting from next year all the government authorities and departments should buy Sri Lankan made vehicles.

I think this guy do make some good decisions, at least once per quarter of once a year (what ever)

What do you guys think about it??

If he really want to see local motor industry to boom…all he have to do is give TAX holydays to all local car manufactures and cut-off VAT (let’s say for ten years). This will add definite competitive advantage to local manufactures such as TransMec and c******o (in future DPMC???). Further it will give these manufactures some time to establish there brand at least in Sri Lanka. Further it will give definite advantage in foreign markets (I mean then these manufactures can start exporting these cars)

Just asking Government authorities to buy local cars will not establish any competitive advantage to manufactures. OR it will not make general public to buy these cars……as manufactures knows how Sri Lankan governments function, they will not increase production, knowing next year govt may reverse the decision. Therefore they will not invest in new production facilities, new models or increase capacity.

Therefore, no increase in production, but high in demand from the government will result in lower the number of unit available for general public (for exports). Therefore this will result in widen the gap between these manufactures and general market.

As far as I believe, what motor industry in Sri Lanka need is stable economic environment where they can invest with out any doubt in mind AND opportunity to build competitive advantage over other SE Asian manufactures. And what I believe is government should act to build better economic environments to industries, NOT just act as big customer.

As always Mr. President is just acting like a usual Sri Lankan politician (short-time benefits), not as a leader who can lead the country to prosperity. This type of statement will be adding attractiveness to budget (in general publics’ eye). This is same as asking govt authorities to buy Sri Lankan Software from last year’s budget, the question is did it results in boom in Software industry….nah!

If he really cares what he should do is stop buying vehicles using our tax money.

Already government has more vehicles than they need. :angry-smiley-024:

I doubt abt the Jag essambly plant. Besides some ppl from the automobile community do not have much faith in the governmnet and also doubts the BOI approved essambly plants here.

They say that it all happens in the wrong way.

Yes its good if the government buys locally built vehicles. Infact now since micrX has joined up with Min of Industries they have become one of the biggest suppliers of vehicles to the government because of the agreements and the price factor.

This is really helpful for the government, but issue is any party will say so many things but nothing happens as they say.

So keep your fingers crossed.

Will Mr President go on a bullet proof micro car? Like the indian politicians using Ambassador. I dont think he will. He needs his BMW. These fellows talk crap just to get the attention and the claps of the audiance. First ask him to implement it to the parliament members. If so, the goverment will fall within one day.

Don’t be ridiculous! If the bugger is gone he is gone…Can ranil come and save us. Atleast These people do well in the war. And we should have the moral obligation to accept that he is our president. He does not need to go in a Fibre glass bodied M***O to encourage or guide others to follow it. If the government start using them it will be a good step forward and will be a new motivation for the others.

What should be taken into account is can there cars cope with our nasty drivers.( I have seen SLTB drivers change gears with out using atleast a single stroke of clutch.. ...)

Dear friend,

No politician is gonna save us or does good to the people. Everybody wants to enjoy the luxury life what they have got and some how to retain in power. This war is a bull shit. Do you think anyparty can win this. NO.... Sri Lanka is on its way to be another Sudan, Somalia or Ethiopia. Im not supporting any politician or any party. We are on a auto mobile discussion and we should always try to promote this industry. The way, the Government is increasing the price of fuel is a crime. This wont allow a middle class citizen to drive his own vehicle to work. If this bugger is gone, there will be another bugger. Mind you,all are buggers and no one is a perfect leader. Why should government give duty free permits to a certain category of ppl. So how about the rest of the professionals and knowledge workers?

no one should expect the president to trravel in a lankan made car. he is a valuable leader and need security unless a lankan car comes up with it

I dont know wot u r saying.

But hear me. I think v shud b given security and given bullet proof vehicles. cos its v ppl who made them leaders (dont worry i didnt vote for anyone) and y shud someone made a leader or a puppet be driven around town with all luxury be excused to use foreign vehicles and us sri lankan ppl who live on this soil (not 3-4feet off the ground) be driving around in locally built or recon or used cars. Mind u most of the ppl livin outstation hv no sources of transport at times.

Come on in sales u say customer is god. here the citizens shud be god cos they can bring you down or keep u in ur place. Its not like the good old days where a king rules and the throne is handed down to his next of kin.

i say none of those idiots in parliament deserves to be driven around in those big vehicles. (I have sold them vehicles).

If the govn wants to help the local industry to grow y not help them by being examples.

See leaders travelling wit escorts and luxury vehicles is just something of a show off for me, I hate it when the roads close for some monkey to travel and v hv to look up and wait. Y cant they just get in bike wear whatever helmet and jacket and use the sucurity person as a driver and go around. no one will know who is going.

If u do go with escorts then u get recognition and u will be more prone to attack not just from the LTTE but from the ppl.

I believe that you Mr. Weed get my point

gummy do not pay much attention to Mr. Weed, as he seems to just like stirring things up, and has no proper opinion of his, highlighted by his contradictory statements.

Well Sri lankan engineers have been making armored vehicles for many years, and the Sri Lankan army uses some of them, I think we are perfectly capable of creating armored vehicles to protect our so called V*P's

so in agreement with a lot of comments made and supporting any initiative to support Sri Lankan industry (as long as there are proven significant benefits to society in general, for example there isn't much point providing extra support for niche industries which employ few people and import most of the things anyway) I must urge our leaders who has come up with these concepts lead by example.

Yeah, Gummy. Same dude was spouting "Be Lankan Buy Lankan" some time ago and now, "no one should expect the president to trravel in a lankan made car." Somewhat confused person, this one.

Well, its not like HE (the Prez) would be buying one anyway, we'll be buying it for him with our taxes. I'm sure he wouldn't mind setting an example of buying a months production worth. Doesn't have to spend his own coin and doesn't HAVE to use it with all the options available.
