Im sure everyone here sometimes feels the need to "break free" for a bit right? I dunno about you guys but the way i do it is to hop in my car and take a nice drive..... and obviously, one important component is the right music, which brings us to the thread... Assuming you wanted to take a DRIVE, anywhere.. be it an early sunday morning blast around colombo, or a late night trip to the hills, if you could burn a single audio disc (im purposely making the limit here), what are those 15 or 20 songs gonna be?

Top Gear did a feature on "greatest driving songs ever" a while back if you remember, and i agree with most of their choices..... but i wondered what the options would be if it was, say a CD of Driving music... well I thought about it, and here's My Playlist of the songs that IMO would be perfect for a proper Driver+Car+road kinda thrash.....

woah, too too many to mention supra mate. depends on the mood. For fast paced days a little techno (fatboyslim meets chemical bros) or on those meloncholy days just David grey.

However the theme from gone in 60 (flowers or something by fatboy slim) always gets my right foot happy. (you know the one right: swing sally up, swing sally down.....)

"Music to drive by" ~ I’m going to have to go with my Six cylinders up front and the quad pipes at the back! 7,ooo revs with the top down on a narrow road as the sun sets... - music whilst driving doesn't get much better than that for moi :-)

I’m a firm believer in listening to the engine!

(...& no those hideous fart cannons on rice rockets do not qualify as music! neither does that bass thump nor the cacophony that pours out of those vulgar sound systems, that attempt to force, what drivel passes off as "music" these days, down the throat of the humble pedestrian or any other being unfortunate enough to be within a 10 ft radius! ~ Overkill and distasteful = I think so! )

...if manifesting chav like prattish behaviour were a must then Good Charlotte's "Girls like cars and money" would possibly be apt...

Any proper motor will have a distinct sound that to a true petrol head can quite easily be considered music - case in point being something obvious like an EJ20 to something more obscure like an Alfa Twin Spark motor (I’m not entirely wrong am I GTAm )

but if one insists on having something playing, then personally it would be something soothing - some Smooth Jazz would be the order of the day (anything from David Benoit to The Rippingtons would do) - if vigorous shift work were required, coupled with some right foot stabbing, then perhaps some Latino music from the likes of Tito Puente would liven things up in the cabin..

80's music is always welcome

...but I reiterate that all this would be far surpassed by the aural delight of a proper motor at full throttle

..."Don't stop me now" gets the nod from me in terms of what’s featured in S_N's list.. & I would suggest the inclusion of Hurricane 2000 by the Scorpions featuring the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra...

Very true Devinda and I totally agree about the fart cannons I couldn't have put it better! Yup the twin spark sounds good but the Alfa 3.0V6 is even better. Best I've heard though are the F355 V8 and the Delta Integrale turbo 4. Bloody awesome!

Like Devida I do like to listen to the mechanical cacophony under the cam head and a rasping exhaust. Best of all is the popping and crackling of unburnt fuel in an old car like my twin webered Giula How I miss her

But I do like a regular dose of big bass pumping especially on a long night drive. Not sure I can fill an album with songs at the top of my head but here list... not conclusive but here it is none the less.

in case of a misunderstanding id like to point out that I like the mechanical symphony a great engine makes as well.... there ARE times however where one requires something different, hence this list....

Agree. Which is why I have Bond and Vanessa Mae in my CD case Tip, don't listen to Maximum Overdrive when taking people along. It sorta has an automatic effect of making you kick it. (It being the gas pedal )

Still, the ultimate cruising song IMHO is Rascal Flatts "Life is a highway". It just rolls out. And I've listened to three different versions of it, but I like the Rascal Flatts version best.

The appearance of this new station Real Radio on 87.8 has also made even the dullest of commutes rather bearable

sadly newer songs don't have such a life span and rarely have "intelligent" lyrics...

On king of wishful thinking...the director has got the perfect track for that situ as my gere gets away from a bitchy girl friend and useless part to bur some rubber... not to mention that it's his lawyer's rubber

Hahaha, I actually have Queen's Greatest Hits in my car's CD player, permanently. The other regulars in the player are Nirvana's MTV Unplugged album (one of the greatest of all time), Natalie Merchant, and my favourite band of all-time, Sublime.

It seems that none of you listen to hip-hop, and I'll bet its because you don't take it seriously enough. Believe me, it is a legitimate musical genre, and there is good stuff out there, if you give it an honest chance. I have a lot of Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Kanye in right now, along with some Snoop, Dre and yes, even 50. I keep almost all of the Black Eyed Peas stuff in at the ready, because nothing gets a day started like their a BEPs song. Again, go beyond the radio-release singles and there are some fantastic tracks on both their big albums. I even rock out a few '80s tracks from time to time - you can't go wrong with Tainted Love.

What I never allow in my car is white-trash-death-metal and unnecessarily angst-driven noise.

Yeah now that s what i am talking about i was thinking that no member s would put up hip hop, R n B !! HE HE Mine is if any new single is released i would deffa get it and burn it to a CD! But of course it would have to be Hip hop, RnB, Rock!!
