it really lacks consistent styling in my opinions.. too many types of lines and curves... didnt think it would be posible, but ithey've made it look worse than the current one :D.

and the rear looks like something you'd expect to find on a Toyota... tsk tsk tsk.. big let down i'd say

BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo

Another Bavarian Niche Buster, But is The World Ready?

By Rory Jurnecka

bmw5series34front500.jpg

You have to hand it to BMW: the Bavarian automaker continues its drive to boldly go where no market niche has gone before -- whether it makes sense or not. Munich's latest segment-busting creation has officially arrived in the form of its BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo that will make its bow on the world stage at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

The byproduct of its Progressive Activity Sedan development idea, BMW's Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo attempts to morph the sedan, sport utility vehicle, and grand touring coupe into a single vehicle. As such, BMW's Germanic perspective on style, comfort, convenience, and luxury can all be found in the Concept 5 Series -- a vehicle the automaker claims is equally suitable for long journeys as it is commuter traffic or short trips to the grocery store.

So what is the Concept 5 Series GT, exactly? A PAS, perhaps? Let's start with some dimensions. From the BMW perspective, it fits somewhere between the midsize 5 Series sedan and its X-model SU... sorry, SAVS. Essentially, at 196.8-in. long, 61.2-in. tall, and 74.8-in. wide, the concept slots in just under the 7 Series (199.8 in. for the 750i) in overall length and just under BMW's X models (66.5 in for the X6) in height. Make no mistake -- this is a relatively large vehicle. With an arching rear roofline blending into a turned-up spoiler at the rear, first impressions are of a vehicle in the four-door coupe vein, but with a rear hatch along the lines of the Panamera. Frameless doors -- long a sports car staple -- are also used for the first time in four-door BMW in an effort to lend it a sportier appearance. In fact, like the X6 the Concept 5 Series GT only seats four people, but this concept is considerably taller than, say, the Mercedes-Benz CLS. A gaping version of the famous BMW "kidney grille" is found up front, slanted forward slightly and quite bold in appearance, flanked by swept-back, traditional dual-round headlights with LED corona rings.

Character lines emerge from behind the 5 Series GT's headlights, gently arcing along the length of the vehicle, terminating at the rear L-shaped taillights. A revised version of the typical BMW "Hoffmeister Kink" is also used at the rear end of the frameless rear window. The hood features a "power dome" somewhat similar to BMW's M5 performance sedan, indicating that whatever lies beneath is not short in the horsepower department. BMW isn't ready to divulge yet what engine might power its latest concept, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a version of the automaker's 4.4L twin-turbocharged V-8 under the hood. Meanwhile, light-alloy, concept-style multi-spoke 21-in. wheels sit at all four corners underneath wheel arches that have been significantly flared. BMW has turned out an entirely new color for the Concept 5 Series GT dubbed Fluid Cuprite and contrasted it against Copper colored brake calipers and inner exhaust pipes.

The overall effect when viewed from either directly ahead or directly behind is very similar to any of BMW's X models, though when seen from any other angle, the Concept 5 Series GT appears much like a somewhat squished X6 SAV - or a taller 5 Series sedan. Even the rear trunk is a cross between SAV and sedan, with two methods of opening. Either the entire lid and rear glass can be swung up hatchback-style, or just the initial sheet metal -- up to where the glass begins -- can be lifted upwards as a conventional sedan trunk lid (VW Group member brand Skoda recently unveiled a similar system on its new Superb sedan). Why a two-stage opening? BMW claims that by using the smaller trunk lid opening, the interior climate of the vehicle is less affected by inclement weather.

Inside the Concept 5 Series GT, BMW has made it clear it's targeting an upscale crowd. Elegance, luxury, and spaciousness are the name of the game with ascending and descending accent lines that integrate the front and rear passenger compartments and a center console that stretches back to the rear occupants. Up front, the driver-focused black panel gauge cluster and expansive 10.2-in. iDrive Control Display appears completely black when at rest. Upon being powered up, both display and gauges are displayed electronically. Above, a panoramic moonroof is designed to lend the cabin an airy, spacious feeling -- accentuated by Glacier White leather seats and armrests. Billet metal, ceramic elements, and wood trim are also used for a modern, yet classic, touch. Front seats are slightly raised to provide a more commanding view of the road -- much like the German automaker's X models.

BMW calls out the rear seating arrangement as another innovation. The two back seats have the ability to be moved fore or aft by up to four inches and the seating angle is also adjustable. With the seats moved into the full-back position, BMW claims legroom is on par with the 7 Series sedan, while trunk space remains a respectable 15.1 cubic feet. Move the seats fully forward, and rear legroom stays at full-size sedan standards, but trunk space increases to 20 cubic feet. Don't have any rear passengers but want even more trunk space? Fold the rear seats at the push of a button and remove the rear bulkhead partition for nearly 58 cubic feet of stowage space.

While no one can accuse BMW of being less than innovative in its design of the Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo, the vehicle does beg to question if the weakened automotive market is ready for yet another exclusive niche. And if so, is the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo the vehicle to define it?

BMW have lost the plot i feel, cuz aside from the M3 all thier other cars just seem mediore - inspite of their wanting to cater to different niches and mkt segments they just seem to lack overall focus & direction

...& then there is the matter of styling... <_<

Haha, case of chickens coming home to roost here... back in the days when BMW were doing crisp, clean designs like the E30,34,36,39 etc, lots of so-called euro "Motoring Experts" were B**ching about their cars looking "Boring"..... well Mr Mangle certainly sorted THAT out, but at quite some cost... <_<

New BMW 5-Series To Be Unveiled Shortly

By Tim Pollard,www.carmagazine.co.uk

BMW will formally show off the new 5-series later in November 2009 – so these are probably among the last scoop spyshots we’ll see of the new 2010-spec Five.

The crayon-swirl disguise is certainly falling away, with large swatches of metalwork now visible on this saloon caught on test around Munich.

The wide, prominent kidney grille is plain to see and the shape of the headlamps is easily identified on this latest near-production spec model.

So when can I actually buy the new 5-series?

UK sales of the saloon kick off in March 2010, followed by an estate six months later.

Four engines will feature at first: 520d, 530d and 535d diesels will be the big sellers here. Overseas buyers and chairmen may choose one of the more profligate 523i, 530i and twin-turbo 535i petrols.

What are the new 5-series tech highlights?

Much of the technology is already seen on the 5-series GT, the Five on stilts that mixes estate, MPV and limo genes in an oddball niche product that shows Munich’s not afraid to experiment. So Efficient Dynamics tech will include intelligent decoupling alternators, eight-speed auto and stop-start on some models.

In the longer run, CAR reported last week how a hybrid 5-series is likely to be the next petrol-electric BMW. The electric motor is housed in the ZF eight-speed auto ’box, like on the 7-series ActiveHybrid.

I was rather baffled the other day after seeing this crossover sorta BMW with a GT badge on it. I didn't want to believe it was a 5 series. I feel violated not knowing there was a GT (Gran Turismo) for the 5 series.

550i, 4.4L V8 Twin Turbo packing 400 horses.

Is this offered for the permit for government workers?? It comes in a 3L Diesel too.. :P

It might be, but even if it was, would rather go for X6... but to be honest they both are ugly to my eyes.
