Abs Indicator

mazdabug

Question

Guys,

This is my 1st post in the forum. Kindly bear with me if this has already been discussed.

I have a 1997 Mazda Familia (Butterfly model) car. For the last three days the ABS Indicator light is up. What could be the reason and is there a risk in running the car with this situ? What is the best place i should consult to rectify this problem?

Hi,

If the ABS indicator is on that mean there is a fault in the system and the ABS has been switched off. There is no risk running like that because the brake system would function as normal but without the ABS functionality. There could be many reasons why the system is malfunctioning. It is advisable you get it looked at and sorted out as soon as possible though. Im sure a good mechanic would be able to diagnose the problem.

You need to take the car to a place with a electronic diagnosis system and plug it and check on the error code. I think there is a place which specialises in Mazda's on Sunetra Devi junction on Attidiya Road (where the 117 bus route meets the 120 route to kesbewa)

Else take it to car mart for a diagnosis but do not do the repair there (unless you want to give them your life savings !0

This is most probably an ABS sensor or the ABS control unit (sometimes water gets inside and causes the unit to malfunction !)

Thanks a lot for the valuable advice. I feel much comfortable now.

I will first check with the Pepiliyana guy. I did not think of going there because i heard he is not equiped with electronic stuff. At least i could get further advice on the matter there. You are spot on about the agents though. They will be my last option. Shall keep you posted.

Agree with DON! Its not about going to the agents, its about getting the correct error code. Any person who has the Diagnostic sensor could tell you the code. Once you have it..even you could do some background reading on the web on error codes and find out the fault.

Be careful first stick to diagnostic..dont let any garage dude touch it..unless you figure out exactly whats going on...most of the garage mechanics will tell you "lets me see", but how can they ..if they dont have diagnostics!

I am sure it wont cost you much for a diag. even at agents..But be sure nothing more just the report..and get out! Can be something minor too...happens often when the sensor face becomes dirty with dust and moisture..or particularly when the sensor goes down...

Remember ..electronics is the last thing you dream about to mess with! <_<

Thanks a lot Priya...could you suggest a place where i can get a good diagnosis done, other than the agents? Is it advisable to go to a good mechanic first to see whether the issue is minor, as you have mentioned?

Hay

Ya as DON said it might be something small – I never knew I had ABS when I bought the car and only realised it when I braked suddenly – apparently the bulb was busted.

Piliyandala guys should be able to fix u out – although he does not have the equipment. BT don’t go for any repairs until u get a second opinion with a electronic diagnoses.

Another place would be Mario but don’t know his locations. Also there is a garage near Nadimal junc near the Y junc left side if u come from hill street – cant remember the name but they were there at a motor show and I remember them telling me that they had the Diagnosis kits – it’s a part of Debug U can’t miss it

By the way Y not register for the Mazda club ? where U there for the meets ?

The only person I know is Mr. Dhammika at close to borella..he did the tunning when I had my MAZDA 1.3auto BHA3P 1997, It did really well on petrol once I got it tuned. Well about the sensor issue he has a diagnostic sensor...will be able to test run and tell you..better call him and ask. He has a diagnoser...but he is not a diagnoser though rather a Tuner.

Unfortunately I lost his number...a forum member might be able provide his contact. Lets also wait and see I think there are a couple of places apart from him.

Mate ..better go to CARMART...If you sluggish ....atleast inquire cost and see..I am sure it'll not be much.

The last time I passed that location I noticed a very modern workshop full of Mazda's so I assumed it was this guy. I might be wrong though.

Macro autotech are quite reasonable when it comes to diagnostics (well better than most at least)

A friend had a similar problem on a Nissan and he took it to A*W who told him it was the ABS control unit which was under the seat in this particular car. He simply took the unit out himself, went to Delkanda found a replacement and plugged it in and Walla ! it worked !

:angry-smiley-048: Thanks a lot guys for your time in sending all the valuable info.

By the way, could somebody tell me the location of Macro Autotech?

Must take the car for a diagnosis by this weekend to a good place and probably to 'Mazna' guy also to see his opinion.

Well Mazdaspeed, i am not a member of the club but have read most of the articles posted on that.

I have used a mazda for just a year. Shall join the club if i keep this car for a longer period. Thanks...

Macro Autotech is on the Narahenpita Road. If you go to their wheel alignment center on Nawala junction they will guide you to the place.

Hi,

Most ABS problems are caused by wheel speed sensors. A simple way to test for this is by measuring the resistance at each sensor by un plugging the connector at the wheel end or at the next connexion. Compare the readings using a simple multi meter. The one that is very different or showing an open circuit is the likely culprit. Make sure the ignition is off and if possible the battery is dis-connected before you start.

If this shows no fault check the same readings at the ABS ecu wiring plug after disconnecting it from the ecu-the ecu is normally attached to the abs pump and valve unit in the engine bay. You will have to identify the wiring by colour code traced from the connector at the wheel end, normally the same in most cars except the french, they use numbers on the wire which are very difficult to read.

In most cases these two will elininate problems with sensors. The next test is using the same multi meter to sheck for voltage.

That I think is a bit too long winded, but if you can get this far and find no fault I can help you do this.

Good luck

Maithri.

Guys, I am also facing to this situation now (regarding my computer box - AC module). Is there any good place for diagnostics for Mazda BHALP? If its please let me know the location and contact details.

I have checked from Carmart. They said they don’t have the diagnosis software for this Familia BHALP 96’ model.

Try Macro Auto Tech, Nawala.

I think Zakie might also have diagnostic equipment which might fit your car.
